Preface
Depression is much more than a feeling or emotion. It has the potential to be a severe and disabling mental illness with the potential to interfere with all aspects of a person's daily life. Although major depression is common, affecting about one in five people at some time in their lives, a great deal of misunderstanding exists about the nature of the illness and its diagnosis and treatment.
During the last 1() years, a lot has been learned about depressive illness and about its development and symptoms. Today, we know more about how this illness affects peoplepatients, family members, and friends. We know how depressive illness can influence lives. Better skills, techniques, and medications have been developed to treat it. Today, most people who are clinically depressed can be successfully managed with

antidepressant medicatiions, some kinds of psycotherapy, or other treatment.
We wrote this book to inform you, and all people who are clinically depressed, about the dramatic advances that have been made in dealing with this disease. We wanted to explain how you, your family members, and/or your friends may take an active part in helping to manage and treat depressive illness successfully. We also wrote the book to clear away some of the confusion and misunderstanding about depressive illness that unfortunately still remains.
