Traditional Chinese Medicine: summary, description and annotation

Traditional Chinese medicine has a strong scientific basis, but the science of these important preparations is often rarely discussed. Western approaches often simplify traditional Chinese medicine to drug discovery in Chinese plants, however, the majority of traditional Chinese medications use complex mixtures of plant extracts, rather than single purified drugs. The combination of different extracts is based on yin, yang and chi theories, which are often poorly understood in the West.

Yin and yang are known to be the balance of agonists and antagonists, whereas chi derives from signalling processes in the body and regulates bodily functions. Traditional Chinese medical practitioners understand that yin, yang and chi constantly interact in the body to maintain health. Western medical practitioners understand how to use agonists and antagonists and how to modify signalling processes, but generally do not accept the use of complex plant extracts...

Preface

I believe in the goodness of the American and Chinese people who remain good friends.

Dr Hua Chuen Mei
from Dr Hua Chuen Mei May 30, 1925 available at
www.abeduspress.com.

Linda Mei Adams, my wife, is the grand-daughter of Dr Hua Chuen Mei, who was an American lawyer in Shanghai who defended several Chinese students accused of rioting in the International Settlement at the Louza Police Station on 30 May 1925. He won the case in June 1925, which led to the May 30 Movement in China. My wife and her mother, Eva Lum Mei, taught me to speak Cantonese. My wifes grand-mother, Polly Lum, used Traditional Chinese Medicine even though her son, son-in-law and grand-son were all Western-trained MDs. I am grateful to the Mei and Lum families for helping me learn the utility of Traditional Chinese Medicine, even when American Medicine may not recognize the utility. I was able to learn the philosophy for using Traditional Chinese Medicine, which differs greatly from the medicine I learned as a Graduate Student of Pharmacology at the University of California San Francisco. This philosophy depends on living in balance in order to be healthy. I was also taught the importance of spirituality in health, since health requires a healthy body, mind and spirit. My poem below is be kind to yourself, be kind to others, allow God to love you. My Chinese name, below, is Ha Cheen Sing, Summer Thousand Honest, and was given to me by my mother-in-law.

I am grateful to Professor Eric Lien for encouraging me to think about the Science involved in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This has been a great challenge for me and resulted in this book. I am grateful to all the authors of the chapters who have applied their great expertise in this book.
