Chapter 1
The History of ''Dodger" Baseball
"Meketre winds and pitches. Menes swings and drives the ball deep to right center field. Sinuhe is off at the crack of the bat, but the ball is over his head. It rolls toward the overflow crowd ringing the outfield. The swift first baseman of the Memphis Tigers races around the bases without breaking stride, and crosses home plate with the winning run before the ball can be retrieved. Memphis wins the Upper Egypt Championship for the third straight year." The date is 2013 B.C.
"Marcus Vinicius is in deep trouble. The Pompeii Panthers have the bases loaded with two men out in the last of the ninth. The underdog Rome Renegades still cling to a slim 3-2 lead in the final game of the European World Series. The dangerous Claudius Fabius, power hitting out-fielder of the Panthers is at the plate, having hit one home run already today. He works the count full against Vinicius, three balls, two strikes. Marcus takes his stretch, eyes the runners, and comes to the plate. Claudius Fabius swings. He misses. It's strike three. The game is over. Rome ends eight years of frustration, and wins its first European championship with a stirring come-from-behind victory in Game Seven." The date is A.D. 13.
