Universitt fr Bodenkultur, Vienna, Austria
Geomechanics deals with the application of the principle of mechanics to geomaterials including experimental, analytical and numerical investigations into the mechanical, physical, hydraulic and thermal properties of geomaterials as multiphase media. Geoengineering covers a wide range of engineering disciplines related to geomaterials from traditional to emerging areas.
The objective of the book series is to publish monographs, handbooks, workshop proceedings and textbooks. The book series is intended to cover both the state-of-the-art and the recent developments in geomechanics and geoengineering. Besides researchers, the series provides valuable references for engineering practitioners and graduate students.

Prologue
This book presents contributions to the International Conference Critical Thinking in the Sustainable Rehabilitation and Risk Management of the Built EnvironmentCRIT-RE-BUILT that took place in Iai, Romania, on 79 November 2019. It attracted participants from many countries across four continents: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain (Europe), Indonesia, Jordan, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam (Asia), Costa Rica, Mexico (North America), Morocco, South Africa (Africa).
During the conference, lively and fruitful discussions carried on sustainable rehabilitation of the built environment reminded me of the good old times I spent with dear colleagues far away: Prof. Wei Wu at BOKU, Vienna; Prof. Chavdar Kolev at the Higher School of Transport Sofia; Prof. Dashnor Hoxha at the University of Orlans; Prof. Paolo Simonini and Prof. Simonetta Cola at the University of Padua; Prof. Andrea Segalini at the University of Parma; Prof. Massimo Ramondini at the University of Naples Federico II; Prof. Paulo Carvalho and Prof. Luis Pais at the University of Beira Interior; Prof. Yoyong Arfiadi at the Atma Jaya University, Yogyakarta; Prof. Assal Haddad at the American University of Madaba; Prof. Ramesh Kumar Maskey at Kathmandu University; Prof. Toufik Cherradi at the University Mohammed V in Rabat; Prof. Wynand Steyn and Prof. Chris Roth at the University of Pretoria. I express a huge thanks to all mentioned colleagues for the opportunity to meet at their universities and discuss the topic before. In our dialogues, they turned out to be critical thinkers evaluating the evidence to decide what is accurate and relevant to the rehabilitation of the built environment. Each of those discussions paved the way to critical thinking on the built environment enabling us to see the angles before making judgements on its sustainable rehabilitation and risk management. A big thanks to all of them also for deciding to return the visit by participating in the CRIT-RE-BUILT Conference. Many thanks to all other conference attendees who proved that critical thinking is also about the sense of discovery consisting not in seeking new places, but in seeing the built environment topic with different eyes.
All authors of the papers issued in this book deserve heartfelt thanks for their contributions submitted in good time. Their papers identify the key ideas of the topic analysing the sources of information and evaluating arguments.
The CRIT-RE-BUILT Conference and its dedicated book of proceedings grew up based on the European project entitled Rehabilitation of the Built Environment in the Context of Smart City and Sustainable Development Concepts for Knowledge Transfer and Lifelong Learning (RE-BUILT) - Erasmus+ KA2 programme for higher education strategic partnerships. Hence, the eight European academic teams jointly working on the project committed to appoint reviewers for the papers published in the current volume. Reviewers contributed fundamentally to the elaboration of the book. In the listing below, the number written in brackets after each reviewers name shows the number of reviewed papers.
Prof. Wei Wu (8) and Dr. Chong Peng (8) from BOKU, Vienna, Austria; Prof. Sbastien Rmond (9) and Prof. Dashnor Hoxha (6) from the University of Orlans, France; Prof. Lon Miguel (7), Prof. Mercader Pilar (5), Prof. Maria Victoria De Montes Delgado (2), Prof. Isidro Corts Albal (2) and Prof. Francisco Javier Guevara Garca (1) from the University of Seville; Dr. Assunta Pelliccio (4) and Prof. Maura Ibimbo (1) from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio; Dr. Kaja Pogacar (11) and Prof. Miroslav Premrov (3) from the University of Maribor; Prof. Chavdar Kolev (14) and Prof. Nikolay Georgiev (7) from the Higher School of Transport, Sofia, Bulgaria; Prof. Vera Glisnkov (13) and Dr. Jan tefak (5) from Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic; Prof. Radu-Aurel Pescaru (7), Dr. Ioana Olteanu-Donov (6), Dr. Alina-Mihaela Nicu (6), Dr. Marius-Costel Balan (5), Prof. Ancua Rotaru (3) and Prof. Petru Mihai (2) from Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iai, Romania. Many thanks to reviewers for their thoughtful comments and efforts towards improving the manuscript.
