Dedication

Nine years prior to writing this book, my grandfather passed away. I gave a eulogy at his funeral, which was my first public-speaking endeavor at age eighteen. After the speech, my grandmother, with her 4'1" stature and Armenian accent, thought it was so good that she repeatedly told me that I should become a writer. At the time, many of us laughed at this disillusioned woman. If you had known my writing abilities at that time, you would have laughed too.

I dedicate this book to the woman who helped raise me, to the woman who saw something in me that no one else did, to my Grammy Silvia (Silvia Ohanesian). I love you!

TABLE OF CONTENTS

FOREWORD

One moment can completely change the course of history.

Penicillin was discovered because a scientist accidentally left out a Petri dish infected with bacteria, and then discovered that the mold that grew seemed to fight the bacteria.

World War I started because of an assassination attempt that only succeeded because the driver of the targets caravan took a wrong turn.

The microwave was invented after an engineer melted a chocolate bar in his pocket while standing too close to radar equipment.

But moments are not only important for the fate of health, wars, and popcorn; one moment can forever alter the direction of a persons life.

Life typically continues along a fairly straightforward path, until one moment causes everything to change. Maybe its internal, or perhaps external, but these moments exist for each and every person. Its a ripple effect that spreads rapidly, and influences every action and reaction that proceeds that moment. That positive result on the pregnancy test. That pink slip delivered by the boss. That phone call from your doctor with the test results. That acceptance letter into a top college. Moments rock your world, and they redirect your path. Some positive, some negative. Some obvious, some subtle. Some cause a 180-degree turn and others just a one-degree alteration. In short, our lives can be transformed in moments.

In September 2008, I had one of those moments when I was handed $650 in crumpled small bills.
