TABLE OF CONTENTS

I grew up believing that one day my prince would come. He would whisk me off my feet and wed fly blissfully into the sunset. I spent much of my life searching for this prince. Several times I thought I had found him. Each time I was wrong. But I kept looking. I kept waiting. Then one day, as if jolted awake from a deep sleep, I realized that Prince Charming wasnt coming. The realization hit me with the force of a tidal wave, and I knew my life would never be the same again.

That was the day I shifted my focus from out there and began to take a long, hard look at myself. What I saw was life-changing. I discovered that I had wings. These wings had been with me since the day I was born, but somewhere along the way I learned that a prince wouldnt be attracted to a woman who could fly. Afraid and discouraged, I tucked my wings away, and they shriveled from disuse. Eventually I forgot theyd ever existed. But suddenly, on that day of awakening, I felt their presence againthe little flutters, the tiny surge of power. I knew that with a bit of effort, I could soar like a bird, go wherever I wanted to go, accomplish what Id never believed was possible.

I have since come to realize something else. I am not alone. Each of us was born with wings. Each of us has the ability to go farther than we ever thought possible, to do things beyond our wildest imaginings. Prince Charming Isnt Coming is meant to be about far more than money. It is about waking up, reclaiming our power, remembering we can fly.

Excerpt from "Prince Charming Isnt Coming" by Barbara Stanny

INTRODUCTION

Its time to renounce Prince Charming and start relying on ourselves instead, especially when it comes to our retirement and financial future.

Prince Charming is an outside projection that something or someone, real or imagined, will save you. Here are some Prince Charming projections many of us have about our financial future:

  • Someone will come and fix all of my financial problems.
  • My pension will support me in retirement.
  • The government will take care of me with Social Security.
  • My 401K will provide for me and my family when I retire.

An on Nasdaq.com states:

A whopping 64% of U.S. workers are expected to retire with less than $10,000 in dedicated retirement savings, according to a new survey by GOBankingRates. And when we dig into how that statistic breaks down, things look even bleaker. That's because 45% of respondents say they have no money set aside for retirement at all. Meanwhile, 19% expect to leave the workforce with less than $10,000, which is basically akin to retiring broke.

The other 36% of Americans aren't necessarily in such great shape, either. A good 20% say they think they'll retire with somewhere between $10,000 and $100,000. But even the latter isn't a whole lot of money in the grand scheme of what could easily be a 20-year retirement or more. And while the fact that just over 12% of respondents think they'll retire with anywhere from $100,000 to just under $500,000 is more encouraging, that's a pretty wide gap, and those closer to the lower end of that spectrum are still in pretty big trouble.

All told, only about 4% of Americans expect to retire with $500,000 or more. If you're not one of them, and you've already been working for quite some time, then it means you have some serious catching up to do.

When I read this article, I thought about my own precarious situation

After contributing to my 401K for 17 long years while working as a paralegal, I thought the income from my 401K account, combined with my future Social Security, would be enough to support me in my golden years.
