Asian Worlds in Latin America Latin America has attracted increasing interest - photo 1
Asian Worlds in Latin America
Latin America has attracted increasing interest in recent years. Interest from East Asian countries has been particularly prominent, beginning with Japanese foreign direct investment in the 1980s and continuing in the new century with growing investment from China. This book examines the nature and extent of Asian business and related activities in the region, showing how this is not limited to Japan and mainland China, and that others are also strongly involved, such as the Taiwanese and the Koreans. The book also explores investment in raw materials and in the energy sector, which is so relevant for the development of the region, and analyses trade agreements and their dynamics. It shows how the various countries of Latin America have been differently affected by the Asian presence, and how these growing links to Asia increasingly open up opportunities for a more significant Latin American presence in East Asia.

This book is the result of many years of research on East-Asian presence in Latin America, carried out both in some Latin American countries and during my work as trade commissioner in Hong Kong and China in the 2000s. I was lucky to have the opportunity to discuss the topics explored in these pages with managers, entepreneurs, scholars, writers and colleagues that helped me grasp the complexity of the LACs social structure, and some of the most complicated issues. Its impossible to thank all of them individually here it would take another book; therefore, I will limit here my list to the ones with whom I had more frequent contact and that more have contributed to form ideas presented here.
