Preface

Breast imaging has rapidly evolved into a comprehensive multimodality science with increasing impact on interdisciplinary patient management and follow-up. Great strides in technology are enabling the detection of smaller node negative cancers in women. In the era of personalized medicine, the ability to detect smaller cancers allows for better targeting of biologically driven minimally invasive therapies.

The goal of this case review series is to allow a keen student to get an overview of breast imaging and the pertinent aspects of its impact on management. It will also serve as a quick reference guide in the reading room to ensure that the user addresses all points that can guide appropriate workup and thereby impact management.

The book is divided broadly into two parts. Part I provides a broad description of the basic concepts of breast imaging modalities explained in a simple and tangible manner, along with the technical and regulatory aspects. Appropriate illustrations and cases highlight the discussions. Part II brings forth the intricacies arising from the clinical and imaging appearances through a case-based discussion in a question-answer format. This design would help prospective students to prepare for exams/boards. It also prepares the reader for clinical practice by addressing the common differentials and recent advances in breast cancer management. The cases have been categorized based on imaging characteristics or disease groups with an emphasis on specific features, which allows for accurate diagnosis. Each case is followed by notes, highlighting the diagnosis, the possible differentials, and the management principles. Where appropriate, historical information has been included. The goal of the writing style was to avoid onerous discussions and to provide a quick and easy read to the students, young radiologists as well as multidisciplinary practitioners dealing with breast diseases. These are exciting times of rapid technological advancements that are changing the way we manage breast diseases, and we hope to inspire the reader to further pursue the fulfilling field of breast imaging and breast care across the continents.

Writing this book together in different time zones was a unique experience and a testament to how technology has changed the face of communication and education.

We believe that this book will upgrade the readers understanding of breast care and, in turn, contribute towards our common goal of improving patient care.

I am grateful to my colleague Dr. Ashish Chawla, who inspired me to pen my passion for teaching through this book. I am delighted to acknowledge my publisher, Springer Nature, for making the publication process enjoyable.

My deepest regard and acknowledgment to my co-author Dr. Supriya Kulkarni for enthusiastically accepting the challenging task of co-writing the book with me, despite our 12-h time zone difference.

Needless to say, this work would not have been possible without the constant encouragement and loving support of my family and friends (countless of them). I dedicate this work to you who are the living force behind my very existence.

Niketa Chotai

I would like to dedicate this book to my late mother who was always my inspiration and guiding force. It was her desire that motivated me to document my experience by writing this textbook which hopefully will be one of many. A special thank you to my husband (Shashank) and son (Mukunda) whose incredible selfless support made this possible. To my father, who has always been my pillar of support and care, I offer my gratitude.

Supriya Kulkarni

Special acknowledgement to Dr. Tanvi Jakhi, MD for her excellent and colourful illustrations and artwork depicted in the book.
