About This Book
The idea for this book came from a recent realization: achieving fitness results is all about choices. If you are given the right information, you gain knowledge and become empowered to make the right choices.
Personal training clients at Fitness Results are given information that keeps them engaged and interested in the training process. They are not blind followers of instructions and are not looking for the quick fix. Instead, they want to know what lies behind the training methods and the nutrition program. They want to understand why the trainers do this instead of that. They are curious about why the trainers appear to contradict conventional information about personal training or nutrition.
This book was originally intended for our Boot Camp and small-group personal training clients the clients who do not have as much one-on-one time as personal training clients. It is meant to foster a partnership between Fitness Results and our clients. In the book, we pull back the curtain and reveal our secrets, knowing it will inspire you to realize your fitness goals. We give you information to help you through the tough times. We prepare you to make the most of your workout time and to take control of your fitness goals when outside the gym.
This book is a compilation of textbook learning and practical application gathered over more than 30 years in the fitness industry. Like all such compilations, it wont answer every question or fit every individual circumstance. While hundreds of clients have benefited from and achieved their fitness goals using the methods discussed in this book, it wont work for everyone, every time, in every circumstance. So when you are reading the book, use common sense and strive to understand the spirit of the words as well as their exact meaning. And if you have a specific medical or physical condition for which you have received advice that that is at odds with what is in this book, follow the advice of your medical professional.
Now lets get to work on Your Fitness Results.
The Fitness Results
Training Philosophy
Welcome to Fitness Results and congratulations on making the decision to improve your health and well-being. Whether your motivation is to lose weight, improve your fitness level, become healthier, or something else, we will help you acquire the knowledge it takes to be successful. This training book will guide you into a quality fitness program one that is simple and based on choices you make that fit your life.
Your health and fitness is a journey. Like any journey, it is important to have directions and find the way that works best for you to get to your destination. Some people prefer the shortest, fastest and safest route; some like a scenic route; while others prefer the most challenging route. Suppose your journey includes a river with rushing rapids, alligators and piranhas, but also a bridge to cross the river right on the path. Those who like a fast and safe route will take the bridge. Those who like a scenic route may travel down the river, do some sightseeing, hope to find another way to cross the river, and eventually make their way back to the bridge. The thrill seekers may try to cross the river without the bridge, just to say they did it.
Picking the right fitness program is similar to making that journey. During your training sessions, we will provide information that shows you how to use the bridge and avoid the dangerous route that often results in discomfort, pain and even injury. In fitness training, more is not always better. The quality of your fitness program is much more important to achieving results than the quantity.
Here are some goals our clients have for fitness training: lose weight and look fit; feel more comfortable in clothes; stop taking a medication; lower BMI or body fat percentage; be able to play sports; compete in a fitness contest. Your training regimen works best when it is aimed at your goals, so set aside all you have heard or read about fitness and training programs and apply yourself to learning the combination of weight and cardio training, nutrition and mental attitude that will ensure your success.
Were working together to achieve Fitness Results.
Fitness is Mind and Body
We can say this with confidence: when you add an exercise program to your daily routine, you will be motivated to achieve your health and fitness goals. Youll eat better, youll sleep better and be more productive, and youll create time for slower-paced activities like walking the dog and going for a bike ride. Youll have a new positive, confident attitude. Combine this with determination, persistence, focus, patience and realistic goals and youll achieve success.
Your mental attitude plays an important role in achieving your health and fitness goals. It is the confidence to move up to the next weight or get the extra rep while keeping good form. It is sticking to your nutrition plan no matter what happens during the day. It is finding the positives instead of the negatives in all situations. For example, if you dont achieve the new single rep maximum you were trying for, dont see it as a failure. View it as motivation to continue your workout program, knowing that soon you will conquer that weight and will be moving on to the next weight. One day youll realize that youre regularly doing things that you never thought you could.
Dont mistake physical or mental exertion for a workout. A real workout is a period of physical exercise that you do in order to improve your fitness, ability or performance. A thrill seeker who takes on a challenge for its own sake is misguided. Improvement will be minimal and the likelihood of an injury is high. A sightseer who picks an exercise because others are doing it or it is the latest fad has failed to align the exercise with goals. Without the proper program and form, the fitness results cannot be achieved. The person who achieves his or her health and fitness goals is the one who takes the time to get good directions, who follows the safest and most direct route and is guided by the trainer.
Weight training exercises + proper form, intensity and duration + mental attitude = Fitness Results
