Thank you to all my readers for their continued support as without you I couldnt do what I love.
S ome people write or create beauty in the world simply to add something to the world.
Some people write or become creative to inspire or education, or simply because their jobs tells them to. For example, academia.
Whilst, some people simply create to become a starving artist because thats what youre meant to do, apparently.
Well, if you want to be a starving artist then this isnt the book for you because if youre like me then you create things to add to the world, but you want to make some money doing what you love.
Now, this can simply be a few extra dollars or pounds in your pocket each month or it could be a living.
The important thing here is- its your choice.
Writing can be a hobby and thats fine.
Equally, writing can be your living.
Ideally, thats how I what to make my living because I do not want to work the typical job. Working 9-5 and asking my boss permission to live my life.
I want to be able to do what I want when I want.

CHAPTER 1: WHY IS MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME IMPORTANT AND WHY DO I CHOOSE IT?
F irstly, I do have to thank Joanna Penn for making me think about multiple streams of income in the very beginning of my Independent publishing career.
However, lets stop for a moment and consider two things:
- What are multiple streams of income?
- What is an Independent Author?
Note: traditionally published authors will still find this book useful as it will still give you an awareness of how to make money as a creative.
What are multiple streams of income?
This is one of my favourite topics to talk about and it means making money from more than one company or method.
For example, if you only make money from ebooks or Amazon then you only have one stream of income. (Were ignoring the different streams of income you can make from selling ebooks on multiple platforms)
Whereas if you make money from ebooks, print book and audiobooks then you can 3 streams in income.
Ill explain why its important in a moment.
What is an Independent Author?
Many people choose to become an Independent or self-published author because we have more freedom amongst other things than traditionally published authors.
And its this freedom that I love about being indie.
Nonetheless, according to the Oxford Dictionary independent can be defined as free from outside control; not subject to another's authority.
In other words, an independent author is an author who is free to write and publish what they want and isnt subjected to anothers authority, be it person or company.
Although I have to admit sometimes it can feel like me subjected to the readers and book markets authority!
Why are Multiple Streams of Income Important?
Building upon what I mentioned in the last section, if you are relying on one company or one stream of income for your money then you are completely DEpendent on that one company.
Therefore, you are not free from outside influence and you MUST do whatever that company says.
Also, if something happens to that company or if that company changes something then your income WILL be impacted.
For example, when Amazon moved to online advertising and its pay to play model in late 2018. A lot of indie authors saw their revenue drop and because Amazon was their only source of income. They lost a lot of money.
Whats stopping this happening to you?
Finally, book sales are a very violate product to sell as there are major surges in demand and sales in some parts of the years. Like: August for the summer holidays and November and December for Christmas. With there being awful or close to no sales in comparison in other parts of the years. Like: January and February as everyone is enjoying the books they got for Christmas.
Hence, why I personally believe you need multiple streams of income to provide you with good money during these months with lower demand.
Overall, multiple streams of income are important because it protects you if a company fails or changes something and you see your income drop. Then these other streams of revenue can hopefully pick up the lack or at least support you until you figure out how to cope with the change.
For instance, in 2018 when Amazon changed its algorithm, your multiple streams of income could support you until you figured out how to use Amazon Advertising.
