Introduction
A very short jargon free guide to help anyone wanting to make some quick easy money from the comfort of their own home. No fancy promises or get rich quick schemes, just real ideas for the real world to supplement your income
Why Produce This Guide?
I was encouraged to write this short e-guide to help others by showing just how many different and quite simple ways there are of making some additional income from home.
I was anxious about the writing part as Im not a professional writer. However, I quickly overcame this hesitancy after looking into the phenomenon of publishing eBooks. It was apparent that the technological revolution had also completely changed the publishing landscape, a quick search through various self-publishing models reinforced my initial view, if I was to dip my toes into writing the Kindle platform was the clear choice.
The Background
Recently a very good friend of mine had to take time off from work to be a stay at home mum to her new son. Having worked all her adult life as a machinist in a clothing factory, she suddenly had heaps of time to spare. The novelty of this new found freedom soon wore off. She confessed not only was it quite boring but the lack of a full time income was also not helping the family budget.
It was at this point that we both sat down together to draw up a list of possibilities for doing something for a few hours a week from home. Initially it looked quite bleak, after all, if it was that easy why on earth did people bother going to work?
Quite soon our mood became far more positive. This was a practical problem that needed a practical solution. As with many things in life we started with a simple list. We came up with the following five bullet points based on my friends scenario -
Time available per day easy work around new child.
Tools at hand home with spare room and garage / workshop, computer, printer, landline, mobile, phone, fax, car etc.
Skills at hand In this example my friend was a skilled machinist, drives a MPV, speaks fluent French, plays the guitar, is a good cook as well as running an immaculately clean and tidy home, so cleaning / washing / ironing is no problem.
Gaining new skills Friends, online, college, clubs etc.
Formal and informal work This was simply splitting any possible work for an employer / company from home against any casual work for family friends etc.
After logically working through the five bullet points above we were amazed. It was actually very surprising how many different ideas materialised. The options seemed quite wide. The real eye openers were Tools at Hand and Skills at Hand which leaned to a number of interesting possibilities, hopefully I can share these with you later in this guide.
Use Technology to your advantage. This new world now opens up all sort of opportunities including -
Working online.
selling yourself and your product.
Use of numerous social network sites really does mean the whole world is just a click away.
Be mindful of the following
Never part with your money, we all know there are numerous unscrupulous people out there, who promise wildly exaggerated get rich quick schemes, in return for your hard earned money. It makes no sense at all, if folks had money in the first place why would they seek ideas from strangers? In this guide the focus is on activities you can do yourself from home using your own skills.
Local laws and regulations if in doubt seek professional advice.
Make sure you are properly insured for any activities undertaken.
Keep all records of transactions etc. you will need these for customers and to file any tax returns.
Marketing is everything. Clearly you want as wise an audience as possible, social networking sites like Facebook are all the rage but dont rule out the traditional methods such as -
Adverts in a local newspaper.
Card in local shop windows or community centre.
A simple flyer on your driveway entrance
Business cards are cheap.
Last but not least satisfied customers will come back and tell others.
Chapter 1
Use what you do for a living, after all you must be good at it. In this case my friend was a skilled machinist. Making, repairing / adjusting dresses, curtains was childs play and was right at the top of the list.
Child minding. After all having her own child and already having minded young pre school children for family and friends in the past this one was easy. In todays hectic world people work all sorts of hours. Finding someone local and trusted can be hard, looking after one or two little ones for few hours a day can generates good income, all just from home. School holidays can mean massive demand with greater earnings
Like the last one busy parents who leave early and return late in the day have hours that dont really fit in with school times. Whether on foot or in the car dropping / collecting children from school is quick earner, still leaving lots of time in between drops for other things.
Using cooking skills. Something most enjoy, if you have the time. Making and selling products like cakes, pies speciality foods to even full meals for friends and family can be a quick money maker. Numerous people have started like this building up successful businesses working with food.
Washing and ironing is a chore! This exactly why people will pay someone else do it for them. Doing a few rounds a week to collect washing / ironing loads is simple, you will be in demand.
Cleaning up makes money. Busy professionals simply do not have the time. Going out a few hours a week when it suits you can be lucrative.
House minding is another simple option. Most people will go on holiday or be away for several days or weeks for work. Having someone local and trusted to keep an eye on the house will be valued.
People love their pets. Watching pets while away at work for a day or even several days while on holiday will make money and probably be much cheaper for their owners than professional kennels etc.
Dog walking is another quick one. People may just be too busy themselves or unable to take their dogs for a walk two or three times a day. If you have your own dog you wont actually be doing much more, just being paid for it.
Shopping. For some with busy careers this can be a nightmare. Let someone else take the strain makes sense. If you combine with your shop you wont be doing much more.
Chapter 2
Gardening for example lawn mowing can be hard work. If you enjoy it offer to help someone else.
Decorating. This can be a major event if doing the whole house. Most would love some informal without sky high professional rates.
De cluttering. Having a larger car or even trailer could be life saver for people having a clear out.
Helping move home. Professional removals firms cost a small fortune. If you have a larger car or can hire and drive a van a few hours work can be bring in good money. Remember not everyone drives, some will need help moving bulkier items, outsourcing for a lower cost will be appreciated when times are hard.
