Low Cholesterol Book
Dear Reader:
You hold the key to your own health and well-being. My own loss of health at the age of twenty-nine ignited my passion for wellness. While pursuing a career as an attorney in a large New York City law firm, I became seriously ill. It took one and half years for me to rebuild my health. I came to some important realizations during this painful time. I realized that without health and vitality, without close connection to family, friends, and community, and without passionate love for my work and for my life, my life held little value, regardless of how many material possessions I might own.
For those reasons, I chose to become a health educator and promoter, to dedicate my life to learning and teaching people about the power of wellness, and to do all I can to help others create health and joy.
Heart disease is a potent killer that touches many lives. The disease process consists of many factors and slowly robs you of healthy circulation and your cells of nourishing oxygen and life. Remarkably, many choices you make daily greatly affect your odds of preventing this disease.
I hope this book provides you with the information and motivation you need to realize how much you can do to create well-being for yourself and those you love. Feel free to contact me at my Web site ( www.shirleyarcher.com ). I'm always happy to hear from my readers.
Sincerely yours in health and wellness,
This book is dedicated to all people whose lives are touched by heart disease in the most intimate ways. May we replace disease with health and use knowledge to promote well-being.
Acknowledgments
I want to thank Carol Roth, my literary agent, for her faith in me. Many thanks to everyone at the Stanford Prevention Research Center for giving me the opportunity to learn so much about the value of healthy lifestyle habits and the power of prevention and for supporting my efforts to contribute my gifts as an educator and communicator. Particular thanks to Drs. Jack Farquhar, Christopher Gardner, and Bill Haskell for always patiently answering my questions, and to my colleagues in the Health Improvement Program for their support and camaraderie: Wes Alles, Joyce Hanna, Jerrie Thurman, Julie Anderson, Jane Rothstein, Sonia Halvorson, and many others at the center too numerous to name individually, but all equally special. Thanks to Laurie, Rita, Kay, Robin, and others for sharing their personal testimonials. Thanks to Dr. Kenneth Cooper for sharing his time and to the wonderful staff at the Cooper Institute for their help. Thanks to Warren Pinckert at Cholestech Corporation for his support. Thanks to Jeff Aroy at Berkeley Heart Lab, Inc. Special thanks to my dear sister Georgia Archer and Anthony Dominici for their love and thanks to Monica, Carol, and Joan for being kind readers.
