Foreword
WELCOME TO 4Steps to Lower Cholesterol, a wise purchase if you are looking to know all about cholesterol including how to lower it and improve your heart health.
Over the years there has been much confusion and controversy about what to eat to maintain a healthy heart, and its no wonder that many of us are still unsure of what we should and shouldnt eat. Sadly, sometimes the message about what to eat gets over-simplified and this has been the issue for cholesterol.
Cholesterol is an important risk factor for heart disease and it is not just the old or the overweight who are at risk. Many young people also have high cholesterol and are completely unaware of it until a routine test or a family member alerts them to the fact that they may have inherited it.
This book is suitable for anyone looking to improve their cholesterol, whether it has been raised through lifestyle factors or is an inherited condition.
In this book, Baldeesh and Linda dispel the myths surrounding cholesterol. Both Linda and Baldeesh are registered dietitians with many years of experience dealing with queries regarding cholesterol management. With their help, you will be able to discover cholesterol-busting foods and eating patterns that help to lower cholesterol, for use either alone or alongside medications such as statins.
I hope you make the best use of this book, including the fabulous recipes (all very easy to follow, inexpensive and based on readily available ingredients) and the many resources, tools and tips, each one designed to make your life easier by providing the necessary help for you to make sustainable small changes that add up to a healthier heart.
Finally thank you for purchasing this book. A small contribution from each sale comes directly to HEART UK and we make good use of this to maintain and develop our activities. HEART UK The Cholesterol Charity is the only UK charity dedicated to people with high cholesterol. Through our website, resources and helpline we aim to support, educate, guide and empower families to make changes to their diet and lifestyle and to understand the facts behind the research and media headlines.

Introduction
THIS BOOK WAS written to support anyone struggling or concerned about the long-term effects of living with raised cholesterol. Does this sound like you? Perhaps you have been trying to manage your cholesterol for years but have been confused by mixed messages. Or you may have tried to make changes but havent been able to stick to them. Or perhaps youve only just been diagnosed and dont know where to start. Rest assured, there really are simple ways to improve your cholesterol and keep your heart healthier and this book will show you how.
Balancing your diet when you have high cholesterol can be challenging but its far from impossible. Our own experiences with people diagnosed with raised cholesterol show that provided you receive practical, clear and realistic advice you can become your own expert in managing your cholesterol. Enabling you to achieve this success is what this book is all about.
We have split the book into two parts. The first part helps to demystify cholesterol and enables you to understand the role it plays in cardiovascular (heart and circulatory) disease, as well as empowering you to have a frank and open discussion with your doctor.
Few books tackle the main reasons of why cholesterol is raised, so we aim to highlight how genetics as well as lifestyle play a key role. We also clarify the role of triglycerides, another blood fat linked to cardiovascular disease. The information contained in the book is aimed both at people with inherited forms of high cholesterol and those diagnosed with raised cholesterol as a result of a health MOT or routine screening.
