Guide
This series attempts to address the topic of aging from a wide variety of perspectives and to make available some of the best gerontological thought and writings to researchers, professional practitioners, and students in the field of aging as well as in other related areas. All the volumes in the series are written and/or edited by outstanding scholars and leading specialists on current issues of considerable interest.
Covering a wide range of topics, this collection of original essays deals with the consequences and challenges of our growing aging population on society. It emphasizes aging as a developmental process while addressing the future of the practice of geropsychiatry and geriatric psychotherapy. This book serves as a valuable resource to guide clinical training, practice, and research on aging into the next century and beyond.

While Santayana admonished us about the risks of not paying attention to lessons of the past, there are similar risks in not contemplating the future. This is why books like Aging in the Twenty-first Century: A Developmental Perspective are so important; they help us to reexamine assumptions, failures, opportunities, needs, and gaps. Aging in the Twenty-first Century, moreover, adds phenomenological to clinical considerations in a broad view of geropsychiatric issues. Of course, in making predictions about the future, one should keep in mind the saying that those who live by the crystal ball must learn how to eat ground glass. On the other hand, the twenty-first century is virtually upon us, making it less bold to build upon the ramifications of present trends in presenting perspectives on what might, should, and can be in the future of gerontology and geropsychiatry.
