Dedication
For Ethan, and living in summer.
Epigraph
I firmly believe that any mans finest hour, the greatest fulfilment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out for a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vince Lombardi
Preface
B ack in late 2008, early 2009, I started a consulting business for small companies with one of my best mates, Mike. Id left the coaching company that I worked for as marketing manager, and we were out doing our own thing, helping people with their marketing.
Id get the deal and sign up the client. Together, he and I would create the strategy. I did most of the copywriting, hed create the design, and wed ship stuff to clients. We were good at it. Within four months, we were completely booked out. There was no more time available. We were working hard for clients. We developed a waitlist. The problem was that we had too much work and not nearly enough money. I had five kids, and so did he.
We decided to go our separate ways and split the clients down the middle. I worked with the coaches, and Mike looked after the other clients. Now I was on my own and fully booked. At the time, I was thinking about moving to something leveraged because I was doing one-on-one consulting and coaching. I had an idea about how it would work, that it would be less expensive than my one-on-one, but Id make it up on volume.
I wanted the flexible time that a leveraged coaching practice would give me, but not just for fun (although I love fun!). The main reason why I wanted to change my business was my son Ethan. My son has epilepsy, autism, and cerebral palsy. But hes also hilariously funny, quick-witted, and very smart. Because of his health challenges, every now and again, he has to go in for a big operation. Every time we go, something seems to go wrong, and his care becomes all-consuming.
Have you ever been in a hospital ward, with someone you love hooked up to the machine that goes bing ? Theres a beep-beep that tracks the oxygen saturation in the patients blood, and then it drops? Thats terrifying. You hit the big red button, and the crash team runs in to resuscitate him. Oh man, you take one step back looking at your son, whos there in the bed. You hold your wifes hand, hope, and pray. These experiences had made me realise I wanted to turn to a leveraged coaching practice, but I hadnt decided on the specifics yet.
The pivotal moment happened when I came home one day, and my wife said, Hey, Hon, I have some news.
I sat down. She looked at me and held my hand.
Im pregnant.
I felt completely conflicted. I was thrilled to bits, of course, but inside I was freaking out because we were not doing well financially. I had just borrowed 200 bucks from my friend Sam to buy food that week.
Oh, man.
The news came at a busy time. Ethan was enrolled in a private school at $25,000 a year, and I wasnt making nearly enough to meet expenses. Our son needed lots of support, and we had four other kids, too. And in the middle of that whirlwind, I got this news: We will soon have another mouth to feed. Thats what got me to launch this thing.
I configured my business in such a way that if I need to step away for a while, I can. I take care of my family, and the business continues without me.
I wrote this book because there are so many great coaches with knowledge and skills who can help others. Either they dont have enough clients, or they are overbooked and have no time to enjoy life. The goal is to help you get the right type of clients and scale up so you have plenty of free time. Lets build the business that lets you spend more time with people you love.
I had 200 bucks in the bank when I started this business. It was my friend Sam who once asked me, How would you feel about having a million-dollar-a-year tax bill?
I said, Mate, I dont want to pay that much tax.
He said, Youre missing the point. If you had to pay a million dollars a year in taxes, think about how much money youd be earning.
I realised, Oh.
Taki Moore
My name is Taki Moore. Im going to teach you how to attract, convert, deliver, and scale a coaching business. This book, Million Dollar Coach, reveals the nine strategies that drive a seven-figure coaching business.
There are plenty of coaches out there in the startup phase of their business. Maybe they earn up to $5,000 a month at first, and theyre barely making a living. I call that survival. They will always peak at a certain level because theyre spread too thin, and their marketing is ineffective. They dont have enough leads, appointments, clients, or money. My job is to help them launch and double their earnings quickly. If thats what you need, pay close attention; this book will be very helpful for you.
The second thing I do (which occupies about 90% of my time) is help coaches scale their business. This group, enrolled in the Black Belt program, is already earning $10,000 a month or more. My job is to help them scale their business and give them three things: more money, more meaning (they get the satisfaction of helping others), and more freedom. I help them create a business that is the basis for a wonderful, liberated, free life.
I dont know where youre at right now. Id love to know what you need most. Do you need to launch because youre not at $10,000 a month yet? Or do you need to scale?
