Whats a Continent?

Earth has seven great landmasses called continents. Each continent is made up of a large piece of land and the islands around it. About one-third of Earth is covered in land. That means about two-thirds of Earth is covered in water.

Asia is the largest continent on Earth. It has almost one-third of all the land on the planet! Both the worlds highest and lowest points on dry land are in Asia. Mount Everest is the highest. The Dead Seas shore is the lowest.

Africa is the second-largest continent. It has two of the longest rivers in the world, the Nile and the Congo. It also has the largest hot desert in the world, the Sahara. The Sahara covers about one-fourth of Africa.

North America is the third-largest continent. Greenland is a part of North America. Its the worlds biggest island. Lake Superior is also a part of North America. Its the largest freshwater lake in the world.

South America is the fourth-largest continent. The Amazon River, the worlds largest river, is found here. Its surrounded by the worlds largest rainforest , the Amazon rainforest. It has more than 16,000 different kinds of trees!
