Introduction
With this book, youll soon be like player Drullkus here, decked out in all sorts of fancy new gear surrounded by a heap of new, awesome blocks.
Its always said that what you can do in Minecraft is limited only by your imagination. This is true, but only to a point. While you certainly can build just about anything you can think of in the regular game, which is often called vanilla Minecraft, the palette of blocks and items that you can use to build your creations is limited to what comes with the game. Sure you can combine them together to make them look similar to almost anything, but what if you had more to use, more to choose from? What could you create then, if you truly had no limits?
That is the question this book answers.
See the world of Minecraft like never before, sometimes quite literally like with this minimap mod called VoxelMap.
THE WORLD OF MODS
That we even can answer that question is because of one of the best, not-all-that-secret secrets in gaming: There is another facet of Minecraft outside of the vanilla game that adds these extra items and truly does turn the game into whatever the human mind can come up with, and it is accessible to any player. Millions of Minecrafters are already taking advantage of this fascinating, thrilling semi-secret world within Minecraft, and in fact, if youve ever been on a Minecraft server and wondered how the heck they got all those crazy new blocks or how they do things like let you play paintball in Minecraft, you were actually taking part in it without even knowing it.
Were talking about the world of Minecraft mods, a term that is short for modifications and which refers to code created by fans and inserted into the regular game. Mods are designed to add amazing new features to change Minecraft in an incredibly wide variety of ways, each of which came entirely from the imagination of players just like you and all of which are super cool in the unique ways that they change the game.
Mods can let you do everything from build a rocketship and fly to the moon, to going deep into ancient pyramids to battle mighty Egyptian queens with your magic Bow in mods like Atum.
WHAT CAN MODS DO?
These changes can be just about anything, from new items and blocks to new mobs to fight to whole new, fully-realized ways to play the game. Want to have a realistic gunfight in a fully-decked out Wild West world in Minecraft? Want to fly a plane around a roaring tornado thats ripping up a mighty mountain range, in Minecraft? Want to battle forty-block-tall monsters by casting blistering and crackling magic spells from the walls of a fantasy-land castle, populated with its own denizens? Want to turn into a hamster and fly to space in a rocket?
You can do all of that and more with mods.
Some mods will even change the way the very land generates (ExtraBiomesXL and Biomes O Plenty) or let you take pictures of your world in brand new, cool-looking ways (Optifine and Mineshot).
The options are truly endless. There are just so very many mods out there, from the small and subtle to those that absolutely change the game from the ground up, making it barely resemble its original self. There are mods that simply change a bit of the look of Minecraft, maybe adding a new indicator to the Heads Up Display, or making it a bit prettier. There are mods that do very specific things, like adding in a series of new mobs of a certain kind (like fantasy monsters, or real-world animals) or a set of things to use for cooking. There are mods that are all about adding new systems to the Craft, some of which are quite simple and some of which make Redstone look like childs play. And then there are huge mods meant to essentially build a whole new game within Minecraft, giving the player almost endless things to do and changing the look and feel so much that it can make it feel like the first time you picked up the game all over again. Basically, if you can think it, theres probably a mod of it, and there are so many to explore that you could spend a lifetime doing so.
Moments like this, where a dragon named The King battles a huge lizard called Mobzilla, can only happen in mods (in this case the excellent Orespawn mod).
WHY ITS A GREAT TIME TO GET INTO MODS
As it is for many popular games, the modding community has been a major part of Minecraft since its early days, but right now it is perhaps the strongest its ever been, and its certainly one of the best and most comprehensive modding communities in the history of games. Thousands of highly talented, creative people all over the world pour countless hours of hard work into creating, updating and maintaining mods for Minecraft each year, and the mods theyve created have gotten incredibly good. And, as is entirely appropriate considering the staggering quality of some of these mods, a huge community within the larger Minecraft community has grown up around these mods with countless players loading them up and creating undoubtedly some of the best things ever made in the game.
Because of the massive amount of mods out there, the incredible communities that have grown up around them, Minecrafts continued popularity, and great new updates, there has never been a better time to get into modding. This book is designed to help you do just that, by showing you a bit on what mods are, how to get them working in your own games, and then taking you on a tour of what mods are out there right now, waiting for you.
