On Hormone Replacement Therapy
T he members of the media, including even some more educated in the medical media, usually report incorrectly on hormones and hormone replacement therapy showing their ignorance and inappropriate bias. This has in turn misinformed physicians who are to trusting and uninformed maybe even your physician was this way at one time. Horse hormones (i.e. conjugated equine estrogens or CEE) and synthetic hormones such as medroxyprogesterone and injectable anabolic steroids) ARE NOT human hormones. Human hormones, we believe, are safe when given in the proper milieu and amounts and the literature clearly supports this. These biologically identical human hormones (i.e. bio-identical hormones) are a critical part of unbiased and true preventive medicine program and here we lay out our case.
Thank you for your consideration of these critical issues...

Modern Hormone Replacement Therapy
P aradigm Shift
Throughout this text weve included data on viable hormone options for prevention of deadly diseases theyve been included because theyre in the literature and because they work. Now we need to take this debate to the next level, one again supported in the literature, but one that will still require you to undergo a serious paradigm shift in the way you think and view patients and their lab results. We and our patients were in our hormonal prime in our 20s and ideally we should try to optimize hormone levels back to this period. There is not one study in the literature that disagrees with this premise but there are a huge number of studies that not only agree with this premise but use these same optimized numbers as parameters in their studies.
Optimization examples in the literature
Example 1
This is not the usual testosterone lab norm for older patients as reflected in this study they use the same optimized values for 20-somethings that we suggest because these are ideal.
Fukui M, Kitagawa Y, Nakamura N, Kadono M, Mogami S, Hirata C, Ichio N, Wada K, Hasegawa G, Yoshikawa T. Association between serum testosterone concentration and carotid atherosclerosis in men with type 2 diabetes . Diabetes Care . 2003 Jun;26(6):1869-73.
They conclude serum F-tes [free testosterone] concentration is inversely associatedwith carotid atherosclerosis determined by ultrasonographicallyevaluated IMT and PS in men with type 2 diabetes. Their lab values (by their lab ranges) Serum free and T-tes concentrations (normal ranges 14.040.0pg/ml and 2.710.7 ng/ml, respectively).
Example 2
First, this is not the usual lab norm for 60 year old plus patients as reflected in this study they use the same IGF-1 values we suggest today derived from 20-somethings because these are ideal. Second, this is THE landmark article by Daniel Rudman that started the anti-aging medicine movement in the USA and was published in THE peer reviewed journal here in the USA.
Rudman D, Feller AG, Nagraj HS, Gergans GA, Lalitha PY, Goldberg AF, Schlenker RA, Cohn L, Rudman IW, Mattson DE. Effects of human growth hormone in men over 60 years old . N Engl J Med . 1990 Jul 5;323(1):1-6.
