That I should write this book in the first place was Richard Stonemans idea. Classics and history undergraduates unwittingly acted as a guinea-pig audience for the main text. Numerous colleagues over several years have equally unwittingly contributed to the view of Greek history that gets exposure here. Alastair Blanshard wittingly and willingly read a first draft and offered helpful suggestions for improvement and Caroline Vout similarly read and improved the new chapter which I have added for this edition. My research assistant, Dr Philip Boyes, has done much tidying and provided the new timeline and maps. I am most grateful to them all.
