Introduction
) confirms that the organisation, management and practice of social work is often open to governmental and public critique. Partly in response to these criticisms and other systemic issues profound changes are planned to the way that social work is organised and delivered over the next few years. For example, the General Social Care Council, the professional body of social work, is to be abolished, social work training is to be reconfigured, and the creation of a College of Social Work has been proposed. This ongoing critique also includes discussion regarding the validity and strength of the evidence base that underpins practice. After all, if the foundations of practice are uncertain or unable to withstand scrutiny, it is unlikely that the practice based on this knowledge will be successful. This book then is about how social work produces, uses, and evaluates the evidence and knowledge that underpins and informs professional practice.
Who is this book for?
The book is primarily intended for students who are completing a qualifying degree programme in social work, or for qualified practitioners who are undertaking PQ (Post-Qualifying) study. Additionally, we hope that other students or workers from health and social care backgrounds will also find the book useful as it addresses a number of themes which are common to a range of professional disciplines. The examples and exercises we use in this book are generic in nature and reflect issues across a range of practice areas.
We are aware that sometimes the complex nature of the questions we raise in the book means that some familiarity with professional practice may be necessary. Nonetheless, even those of you with minimal practice experience will be able to engage with the issues as they address many core components of social work. As so often, a willingness to undertake wider reading will also enhance your understanding. A range of helpful materials are identified at the conclusion of each chapter. The book is interactive in style and we would encourage you to engage with the critical thinking exercises in each chapter as they will broaden your understanding of the debates we raise and increase your ability to analyse complex ideas.
The Quality Assurance Agency Subject Benchmarks for Social Work
Throughout this book explicit links are made to the Subject Benchmarks for Social Work developed by The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). The intention is to help those students who are studying for a social work degree to make links between the book and their academic/professional development.
