The 1966 edition of this book has become a standard work. In this new, revised edition, Pizer has dropped three chapters and has refined and extended the work by adding six: American Literary Naturalism: An Approach Through Form, American Literary Naturalism: The Example of Dreiser, The Problem of Philosophy in the Naturalistic Novel, Hamlin Garlands 1891 Main-Travelled Roads: Local Color as Art, Jack London: The Problem of Form, and Dreisers Nigger Jeff: The Development of an Aesthetic. The book contains definitions of realism and naturalism based on representative novels of the period ranging from Howells Rise of Silas Lapham to Cranes Red Badge of Courage; analyses of the literary criticism of the age, stressing that of Howells, Garland, and Norris; and close readings of specific works by major figures of the period.

Preface to the Second Edition
The widespread use of the 1966 edition of this collection of essays about late nineteenth-century American literature has led me to believe that a revised edition, containing both the heart of the original book and considerable new material reflecting my continuing thinking on the subject, might serve a similar purpose. The revision has taken two forms: omission of three essays from the 1966 edition and inclusion of six new ones; and minor revision of the text and notes of the remaining 1966 essays (as well as the Bibliography), principally to bring this material up to date. For the interested reader, the three essays from the 1966 edition which have been omitted are: "Evolution and Criticism: Thomas Sergeant Perry," "Evolutionary Criticism and the Defense of Howellsian Realism," and ''The Garland-Crane Relationship." The six essays which have been added are: "American Literary Naturalism: An Approach Through Form," "American Literary Naturalism: The Example of Dreiser,'' "The Problem of Philosophy in the Naturalistic Novel," "Hamlin Garland's 1891
