PREFACE
As I note in the introduction, my first published essay on a work of American literary naturalism appeared in 1955. I have published regularly on this subject since then. The essays collected in this volume represent one portion of this body of criticism, that in which specific naturalistic novels are discussed in relation to general ideas about the nature of American naturalism as a whole. These essays fall into three groupings, which thereby constitute the organization of the volume. Some deal with the full range of American naturalism, from the 1890s to the late twentieth century, and some are confined either to the 1890s or to the twentieth century. In addition, further insight into my views on American naturalism is provided by an introduction in which I offer a brief historical overview of my interest in the subject and by a number of reviews of recent studies of literary naturalism in America. The volume concludes with a bibliography of general studies of American naturalism.
