If you have read my other books youll know I like to play with word origins to at least try to find out the real meaning of words. Lets take Addiction (Note: those of you into psycho and neuro-lingusitics the word addiction is a nominalisation).

From 1600s sense of tendency, of habits, pursuits , etc. From 1640s as state of being self-addicted, derived from Latin addictionem (nominative addictio) = an awarding, a devoting . It was a noun of action from the past participle stem of addicere (see addict below). Interestingly the earliest recorded sense was less severe: inclination, penchant; this is now obsolete. The modern sense of addictions is recorded in 1906, in reference to opium (however, there is an isolated instance from 1779, with reference to tobacco). In essence addiction is a pleasurable habit.

At least, thats often how it starts. What about Addict (Note: this is an inaccurate static label that implies an identity level genetic basis to addiction I have covered this in my other books.) First recorded in the 1530s (implied in addicted); derived from Latin addictus, the past participle of addicere - to deliver, award, yield ; give assent, make over, sell , and figuratively, to devote, consecrate; sacrifice, sell out, betray . From ad to + dicere = say, declare (as in diction); but also, adjudge, allot. In the 1520s the word meant delivered, devoted. An addict, that is someone who is going through a temporary phase of the process we call addiction, is selling out their health, life and relationships at worst; they are abnormally focusing on the drug of no choice, whatever that may be. Misery and addiction.

When people cannot get, or perceive that they cannot get their basic, fundamental universal human needs met, they are prone to develop addiction problems (see my other books and the section on missing need fulfilment in this book). That is when we are stressed, anxious and miserable we want a way out a way to mask, to supress the psychic and perhaps physical pain. We may turn to devices; external media etc. which can induce intense pleasure states in ways that so hypnotically absorb us that we forget about our troubles for a while. What starts out as a naughty treat can turn into a prison. Addiction is a coping habit: nothing more, nothing less.

When we carry out the addiction patterns of behaviour long enough the conscious act of using or taking the drug of no choice is taken over by the subconscious. You no longer have a choice about it it has become wired in looped as a pattern at the subconscious level. This is what produces the feeling of compulsion, impulse etc. It reality the act has become such a part of life that the subconscious, in response to certain inner and outer cues, performs the behaviour without conscious volition becoming involved. In effect the addictive process has become a post-hypnotic command. Basically when we feel like crap for long enough we want to feel good just for a while! We have indulged in a Gnostic fantasy: the idea that we can artificially induce pleasure and joy into our life, when what we need to do is fix our life or get a life first.
