I have been incorporating sandtray or sandplay therapy into my work with children and families since the late 1970s, and I continue to be amazed at the scope and breadth of its reach. I continue introducing both new students and seasoned therapists to this amazing psychotherapeutic tool, and welcome them to take the personal journey of building their own sand tray so they might understand first-hand the amazing power of sand therapy. Time and again, I join the wonder and joy of students and professionals as they become enthralled with this process. The most consistent outcome of professional training is how actively mental health professionals from diverse theoretical backgrounds become enthusiasts of sandtray therapy, quickly collecting miniatures, building or purchasing sand trays, sharing sandtray stories, and creating an environment in which their sand therapy work can evolve. Sandtray therapy is a fluid and evocative nonverbal therapy process that can both enlighten and confront the sandtray creator. Thus, it has amazing potential to override resistance and provoke the unconscious to become available for externalizing and then processing even the most difficult or challenging experiences. When metaphorical and symbolic elements emerge in the sand tray, therapeutic work becomes more accessible and possible and transformative experiences can occur.
