Moving Stretch: Work Your Fascia to Free Your Body: summary, description and annotation

Moving Stretch is an effective, powerful, and enjoyable type of resistance stretching that not only strengthens and frees the body, but reconditions the bodys fascia, rejuvenates the tissue, releases adhesions, relieves pain, and increases flexibility. This accessible guide gives step-by-step instructions for people who feel tight or older than they should, people with poor posture, athletes who want to boost their performance, and those who want something more than conventional stretching. This book provides you with many different stretches for the whole body including the hands and feet, as well as routines for specific goals such as improving posture, helping office workers stay healthy, stretching the back, and more. Even those with sedentary lives will see and feel a difference, with just 10-20 minutes of stretching yielding benefits that may last the whole day. Many of us are limited in our movements, hunched over, or tight. Ideally we would move in a variety of ways throughout the day, keeping our bodies fresh and youthful. However, office jobs and sofas can lead to bodies that are imprisoned in a cage of tension, whose tissue is dehydrated and stuck together, with some areas that are very weak or tight. Normal stretching is not strong enough to break us out of that state. When we tense our bodies and move through that tension, we engage the fascia and recondition it into a more youthful state, restoring great posture, elasticity, and power.

You already know that anything is possible. Thank you for inspiring me every day.

I want to thank my clients and students for letting me try things out with them, using the stretches and inspiring me with their progress; without you guys there would be no Moving Stretch. I also want to thank my editor, Jon, who waited very patiently for the manuscript and helped me with lots of random questions and also Hannah for the extra guidance!

Sweaty Betty generously provided the clothes for all of the female models in this book and Simon and Fleur were especially helpful in getting the gorgeous outfits to me safely and on time. I think their mission of helping to inspire women to become fit and empowered is amazing, and one very close to my heart. And thank you to the ladies who came to stretch and be photographed! Nikki was one of the main models, very kindly giving her time and energy, as well as her focus as she demonstrated lots and lots of stretches. Natalia Hinds came and made the cover amazing with her sparkly presence and also helped to liven up the beginning chapters of the book; Im glad we met by chance and that you happened to be an actress and also perfect for my front cover! A big, big thank you also to Katie, Daria, Amelia, and Carly. You guys posed like the superstars you are and stretched every day for a month. I have to say you were all looking even more fabulous afterwards!

2XU were epic as I reached out to them at short notice, and Aidan and Mike managed to race against the clock and get me clothes for the men in this book. They make such high-quality technical gear, the guys were really happy to have it for their exercise outside of their stretching also.

To the men; thank you for overcoming any natural camera-shyness. You all looked amazing! Especially after the month of stretching you undertook. Brad was very enthusiastic in giving his time and focus in demonstrating the stretches as the other main model of the book. Javier and Avi, I want to thank you both for your dedication in stretching every day for a month. I am so glad that you got some good changes!

The people who made the book as good-looking as it is are two wonderful photographers. I want to thank Lucy Arrowsmith, who took all of the photos inside the book; you are a great support and source of inspiration (and attention to detail, stick that mat down!). Also Karen Yeomans, who made the cover photo better even than in my imagination, thank you for your creativity and your tenacity in getting the right shot; I think its beautiful.

Id like to thank Tom Myers and Julian Baker for allowing me to interview them. Tom, as the creator of Anatomy Trains, is a guiding light on all things fascia and I was very lucky to have the chance to ask him some questions to clarify what I thought about fascia and stretching, especially as he has 40 years of experience! Julian Baker is a leading Bowen practitioner and expert in fascia matters and I was fascinated by his unique approach to bodywork and very grateful to have been able to attend a dissection with him for the purpose of looking at the anatomy of the fascia within the body. Even though I am not the most academic person or best versed in fascia research, they were both very patient with my open-ended questions, so thank you.

I would like to say thank you to Simon Mawer for recommending a malacologist when I was trying to find out if slugs have fascia and to Professor Gonzalo Giribet who managed to answer this slippery question (I would also like to thank all the friends I kept boring with the fact that slugs have around 27,000 teeth!). I would also like to thank Simon Connor from the Museo Egizio in Turin for allowing me to use a photo of their Egyptian dancer, as well as the many other people who gave me permission to reproduce their photographs. Thank you also to Charles, who I met at a NYE party in the woods and who thought my ideas had potential and gave me a lot of great advice. PR Whizz Georgie Wolfinden at Blossom Consulting has been wonderful at helping me to spread the word, huge thanks Georgie!
