Be present, enjoy the moment,

T hat was the advice of my counsellor some years ago in the only meeting we had. I remember thinking, Yeah, right. How is being fully present, in the moment, going to help me?
I had sought support when I found myself hitting rock bottom. I was in pain emotionally. Over and over, I felt like running away from my life, leaving for another country, and starting all over again. I wasnt finding meaning in anything I was doing. I felt empty and lonely, and I didnt like the direction in which my life seemed to be heading. To distract myself from my pain, I found outlets in going out drinking and finding validation in serial dating. These behaviours were my way of self-medicating, and they became increasingly self-destructive. I was going through the motions of living, without meaning or purpose. I was mostly living in my headthinking, thinking, and overthinkingand living my life as if on autopilotwork, home, gym, work again, party, back to work, gym, and back to partying again. I recall asking myself many timesas you may have as wellIs this what life is all about? What am I doing here? And more importantly, what am I doing with my life?
I knew there was more for me. I had a sense of knowing in my heart that my life could be more than what I was experiencing, that I could live in a completely different way. I remember thinking that I was the one responsible for taking the leap to get me out of the spot I found myself trapped in. I realized it was my responsibility to find meaning and give purpose to my life. It became clear that my happiness and well-being depended only on me. In my heart, I knew I was the one limiting myself, but I also knew I had the ability to do anything I set my mind to. I knew changes were required, and it was up to me, and only me, to make those changes. It was my life, thus my responsibility.
I decided to get out of my situation. This took me on a journey deep within myself. I read and read and watched everything possible to find a way to dig myself out of the emotional pain I was experiencing, to get out of my own way. I decided to change all those aspects of me that I didnt like and to start living a healthy lifestyle, taking care of my body, my mind, my heart, and my soul. I chose to take charge of my life, and I began looking for ways to shake off my limitations and lead a more fulfilling life.
After practising what I teach in this book, I am now living a different life, one that is easy, peaceful, enjoyable, passionate, compassionate, fulfilled, and happy. It is a way of living that is based on love and purpose, and filled with immeasurable opportunities and no limitations. It is a life in which I decide how far I can go in realizing my true potential. Ive recognized that I have the power to direct my mind and how I choose to experience life. In the process, Ive unearthed the best version of myself, which had previously been overshadowed by layers and layers of subconscious conditioning.
If you are reading this, you may be experiencing similar emotions and thoughts. Do you feel that you are limiting yourself or that something is missing in your life? Do you have the sense that there is more to life than what you are experiencing? Maybe you feel that you want to take a vacation from being yourself and run away from everything. Perhaps you have achieved all the financial success that you want and still find yourself empty. Are you one of those people who has worked all their life and forgotten about themselves along the way? Is fear stopping you from going after what you desire? Are you seeking to give meaning to your life? Perhaps you are consumed by a negative cycle of thoughts. Or maybe you are suffering from all of the above and doing anything you can to numb and distract yourself to avoid ruminating about your life.
With determination, it is possible to change just about any negative life situation and discover your limitless potential. The only things required are 1) a conscious decision to choose yourself, and 2) the willingness to do the inner work and connect with your essence. You have the power to take ownership of your life and experience it as your heart desires. You can choose to free yourself from the limitations of your mind and its conditioned influence on your well-being.
What I have come to understand from my journey within is that each of us is entirely responsible for choosing how we experience, interact with, and respond to our life and its challenges. The problem is that most of us, subconsciously, choose to live our lives from a conditioned perspective inherited from others, from our personal history, and from society. We behave based on personal experiences, societal expectations, and beliefs about ourselves that we have created in our minds. Most of us are not even aware that we harbour those concepts and act on them. We have been programmed to go through life as if on autopilot, seeking to live up to the expectations of others and seeking validation and happiness in the outside world. We are not connecting with our inner selves and true natures to give our lives direction and meaning. I have discovered that most of the time, we experience life from a place of fear, and fear can take over and direct our lives without our awareness. Fear prevents us from going after our hearts desires, and it keeps us suffering.
