Dedication

I would like to especially thank Dr. Ric Harnsberger for inspiring me to tackle this project. I can only hope that the book maintains a tradition of excellence born from the creative and intellectual collaboration of the University of Utah neuroradiology family and many others.

The book is dedicated to my parents, Jerome and Joy, to my wife, April, and our sons, Grayson and Garrison. Without their love and support, this would not have been possible.

Preface

We are proud to present Imaging Anatomy: Head and Neck, which takes its origin from the landmark publication Diagnostic and Surgical Anatomy: Brain, Head and Neck, Spine, published in 2006. In this book, head and neck anatomy is approached as a critically important stand-alone subject for radiologists and other professionals who rely on head and neck imaging for patient evaluation and therapy. This concentrated approach was born out of a need to expand the overall content of the original text with new sections, refresh diagnostic images and illustrations, and provide more specific anatomic detail. While the target audience remains the radiologist or radiology resident, this book is intended to provide a comprehensive reference for students, anatomists, and nonradiology professionals, including oncologists, radiation therapists, and head and neck surgeons.

Like Diagnostic and Surgical Anatomy: Brain, Head and Neck, Spine, the text is offered in a succinct, bulleted format that provides maximum content in an easy-to-use layout and allows for rapid reference and review. In each section, the critical foundation of normal anatomy is provided along with imaging recommendations and imaging correlations. Radiologic-pathologic correlation is provided when appropriate to emphasize anatomic relationships. The text is accompanied by hundreds of full-color graphic illustrations created by our expert medical illustrators as well as hundreds of high-resolution multiplanar CT, MR, and ultrasound images. Each illustration and image is labeled and comes with its own legend to expedite the learning experience. The result is an organized and readily accessible anatomic atlas of head and neck anatomy.

Purchase of this book comes with an electronic version, Expert Consult, which provides the ultimate in accessibility whether the reader is at home, in the reading room, or in the clinic.

This process of collaboration has been an amazing journey, and I would like to personally thank the many coauthors and the entire staff at Elsevier, especially the medical illustrators. I was truly fortunate to work with and learn from such a fantastic team. We hope you find that
