Drugs and medical devices are discussed that may have limited availability controlled by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use only in a research study or clinical trial. Research, clinical practice, and government regulations often change the accepted standard in this field. When consideration is being given to use of any drug in the clinical setting, the health care provider or reader is responsible for determining FDA status of the drug, reading the package insert, and reviewing prescribing information for the most up-to-date recommendations on dose, precautions, and contraindications, and determining the appropriate usage for the product. This is especially important in the case of drugs that are new or seldom used.

Foreword
I take notice of books that are written with the learner in mind. In fact, most of my career as an educator has been spent observing and helping students learn. Since most dental professionals are lifelong learners, the books that get my foremost attention have a distinct methodical format that is user-friendly for students and seasoned practitioners.
In the past 15 years, our annual Summer Bootcamp for Dental Educators has brought together faculty members from over 250 dental and allied dental schools to determine how to provide learner-centered experiences for our students. We focus on teaching methodology and frequently discuss books and techniques that help us educators impart superior assessment skills and critical thinking skills to students. Astute assessment skills must be so valued by the learner that he/she employs the skills routinely in an organized and sequential way throughout a lifetime of practice. In doing so, educators often refer to excellent resources such as the Color Atlas of Common Oral Diseases, Enhanced Fifth Edition (The Color Atlas)
