Introduction
Taking care of your body, no matter what your age, is an investment.
-Oprah Winfrey
These simple words, spoken by Oprah Winfrey, are profound and wise. It is never too late to start taking care of your body. Whatever effort you put in is a huge investment with incredible returns. You improve your overall looks, your health, your quality of life, and your relationships with everyone you interact with. Maintaining your body completely changes how you look at the world. Your mindset changes, and you see the positive in situations where before you saw only the negative.
The goal of this book is to provide you with the necessary tools to begin calisthenics with confidence, backed up by facts and not peoples opinions. This book will show you that you can have the body you have always wanted, without spending hours in the gym each day, nor spending a fortune on exercise machines and equipment.
The world is currently experiencing a pandemic that impacts every human on the planet. If we learn only one thing from this, it is that we must face the critical importance of taking care of our bodies even when we are unable to go to the gym or participate in the sports we love. This is the goal of this book,
to show you that it can be done, and how to do it.
Why Specifically Calisthenics
Calisthenics is not only for super fit athletes who wish to maintain their ripped looks and fitness levels. It is accessible to the majority of people of different ages, fitness levels, and different states of health. Today there are specially developed calisthenics routines for seniors as well as school-going children, and it places no limitations on gender.
In 2017, the Sport and Exercise Sciences Research Unit at the University of Palermo, Italy published the results of a study called The effects of a calisthenics training intervention on posture, strength, and body composition. The study concluded that calisthenics training is a feasible and effective training solution to improve posture, strength, and body composition without the use of any major training equipment.
Calisthenics differs from other forms of exercise and appeals to people for many reasons, such as the following:
Anyone who is out of shape and wants to change how they feel and look can do calisthenics.
You can do this form of exercise literally anywhere and at any time. You are not bound to a specific place or time frame.
People who experience health problems and want to change to a healthier lifestyle can do calisthenics.
Anyone who does not like going to gyms and working out on all the machines available there will enjoy calisthenics.
Every person who prefers their workout routines to be natural and free, and not dependent on any specific piece of equipment, without which they would be unable to exercise, will prefer calisthenics.
People who want to use their own body weight to increase their strength, muscle tone, and development can use calisthenics.
Anyone who has fallen into a rut with their current training program of monotonous exercise workouts will like calisthenics.
What Do You Stand to Gain?
Calisthenics brings literally endless gains into your life, and we will go into detail about the specific benefits in Chapter 5. The gains calisthenics will bring you fall into four broad categories that each cover a very wide range of benefits.
Endurance
Consistently practicing calisthenics routines builds your muscular endurance, and over time will build up your bodys resistance to muscular fatigue. As you progress with calisthenics, you will keep challenging your body until you involve the muscles throughout your entire body in building endurance. The muscular endurance of your cardiovascular system also builds through calisthenics routines, which is a huge health benefit for anyone.
Strength
Calisthenics is associated with building muscle strength, which it does incredibly well. Often, however, people do not realize how much calisthenics also strengthens your joints and contributes to bone health. This is exactly why the US Military uses calisthenics in their basic training for the building of strength, and also to help prevent injuries. Using calisthenics for building muscular strength is much gentler than, for instance, weight lifting, which takes a toll on the body with greater wear and tear.
Flexibility
When you start out with calisthenics, you become acutely aware of stiffness and tightness in body parts you always considered to be very flexible. This is where the benefits of calisthenics workouts really kick in, as these exercises have the full range of movements that your body should be capable of. The longer you do calisthenics, the more flexible your entire body becomes as your strength increases and your body adapts.
