Bibliography of Israeli Politics
Westview Special Studies
The concept of Westview Special Studies is a response to the continuing crisis in academic and informational publishing. Library budgets are being diverted from the purchase of books and used for data banks, computers, micromedia, and other methods of information retrieval. Interlibrary loan structures further reduce the edition sizes required to satisfy the needs of the scholarly community. Economic pressures on university presses and the few private scholarly publishing companies have greatly limited the capacity of the industry to properly serve the academic and research communities. As a result, many manuscripts dealing with important subjects, often representing the highest level of scholarship, are no longer economically viable publishing projectsor, if accepted for publication, are typically subject to lead times ranging from one to three years.
Westview Special Studies are our practical solution to the problem. As always, the selection criteria include the importance of the subject, the works contribution to scholarship, and its insight, originality of thought, and excellence of exposition. We accept manuscripts in camera-ready form, typed, set, or word processed according to specifications laid out in our comprehensive manual, which contains straightforward instructions and sample pages. The responsibility for editing and proofreading lies with the author or sponsoring institution, but our editorial staff is always available to answer questions and provide guidance.
The result is a book printed on acid-free paper and bound in sturdy, library-quality soft covers. We manufacture these books ourselves using equipment that does not require a lengthy make-ready process and that allows us to publish first editions of 300 to 1000 copies and to reprint even smaller quantities as needed. Thus, we can produce Special Studies quickly and can keep even very specialized books in print as long as there is a demand for them.

Guide
Although the modern State of Israel is less than four decades old, since its creation it has played a role on the worlds political stage far greater than its size might suggest. This has been reflected in recent years by a marked increase in scholarship focused upon the Israeli political system. Many scholars and students, however, have been hindered in their studies of Israeli politics because they have had problems in finding sufficient resources upon which to draw for their research.
The goal of this Bibliography is to respond to this research problem by making available to those studying the Israeli political system a readily accessible bibliography of published work dealing with the Israeli political world. This includes, among many other topics, studies of the Israeli constitutional system, elections and political parties, political coalitions, public opinion, political history and political economics, diplomatic relations, foreign policy, and Zionism, as well as studies of related topics such as Palestine and the Palestinian people, the resolution of the West Bank and Gaza Strip question, and the Arab-Israeli peace process generally.
One of the special strengths of this Bibliography is its keyword index, which serves as a point of entry to the almost-1,500 entry list of publications. The comprehensiveness of this research resource will save the individual doing research on Israeli or Middle Eastern politics a great deal of time at the early phase of the research process: finding materials for study. Thereby, it is hoped, this resource will encourage further inquiry into this body of scholarship.

One of the special satisfactions involved in the completion of a project such as this one is that the opportunity is presented to thank in a public way those who provided help and encouragement along the way. I am pleased to be able to do so here.
The creation of this Bibliography was supported in part by a grant from the Instructional Incentive Grant Program of the Instructional Development Center of the University of Vermont. These grants provide opportunities for the development of new instructional materials, and are monies very well spent. I appreciated the support which was offered to me at the outset of this project, and I am happy to acknowledge it now.
I would also like to gratefully acknowledge the assistance and encouragement of Nancy Crane, Library Associate Professor at the University of Vermont, and Nancy Margolin, formerly at the University of Vermont library and now a medical reference librarian at the Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Both of these colleagues and friends offered assistance in early phases of this project, and encouraged me to seek a publisher for the project results as time went on.
Dean Birkenkamp, the Editorial Director of the Special Studies Program of Westview Press was quick to respond to my initial contacts, which was greatly appreciated at the time. Krista Hayenga, an Editorial Assistant in the Special Studies Program at Westview, was equally prompt with responses to my queries about the production process, and I want to acknowledge her help here.
