The South Caucasus Security, Energy and Europeanization
This book explores developments in the countries of the South Caucasus Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia since the EU included the region in the European Neighbourhood Policy in 2003. It considers issues related to energy, ethnic conflict, steps towards regional integration, and, above all, security including the involvement of Russia, Iran, Turkey and the United States. It assesses the key importance of energy, argues that the prospects for regional integration are weak, and contends that while the approach of Europe and the United States has been confused and weak, not holding out great hope of EU or NATO membership, Russias interest and involvement in the region is strong, and growing.

This book grew out of an interest in the developments in one of the sub-regions of Europe, the South Caucasus. It examines the growing challenges and dilemmas faced by the South Caucasian countries in the fields of foreign policy, Europeanization, energy and security. These issues are examined at three levels, namely, domestic, regional and international. The evolution and the nature of the region is also explored both from within the region and without. In the preparation of the book project the authors came together in a workshop that was held at Middle East Technical University in Ankara between March 14 and 15, 2014. In this workshop entitled South Caucasus in Wider Europe: Security, Energy and Europeanization, the participants presented earlier versions of their chapters and engaged in discussion on the main themes as well as the specific chapters. The workshop contributed immensely to the development of the book. We would like to thank the Middle East Technical University, Ankara-Turkey and the Center for Strategic Studies, Baku-Azerbaijan for their support to our workshop and the following stages of the book project.
