Introduction
The first edition of Nutritional and Integrative Strategies in Cardiovascular Medicine was published in 2015. Now several years later, our second edition has not only been updated but also reflects several themes and attributes of the rapidly changing medical environment. The last few years with the advent of antibiotic-resistant organisms, killer-type viruses and increasing environmental toxicities have indeed pushed our medical system to the limits with cardiovascular disease still being the number one cause of death and disability in the world. This textbook will not only address the zeitgeist of the times but will offer numerous multiple strategies into the investigation and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The authors have their own way of telling their stories while offering valuable information at the same time. Some chapters are conversational, others are like reading a scientific journal, and still others reflect personal observations in the care of their patients. Multiple styles of writing offer the reader creative ways of assimilating the information. Although there is some duplication of content, the reader is offered multiple interventions in the search for treatments and solutions.
Targeted nutraceuticals are not a good substitute for good nutrition, but they do provide support that can help prevent inflammatory pathology while bolstering energy production in the body at the same time. For example, knowing which nutrients are suitable and are designed to facilitate and stimulate energy substrate production is the basis of my chapter on Metabolic Cardiology.
The combination of targeted supplements and a healthy diet has been the cornerstone of the nutritional strategy that I applied for decades to assist my patients with heart disease and in many other pathological situations. I use this approach therapeutically as well as preventively to assist and create optimum health. Although pharmaceutical drugs do work in restoring blood flow, many times surgeons may be called to perform lifesaving bypasses or even cardiovascular transplants when a pharmaceutical approach is not optimal. Indeed, conventional medicine works! However, in integrative medicine, we use or recommend many methodologies to help support our patients. But we have learned to do something extra, something normally ignored, and absolutely simplistic and sometimes bargain-based cheap compared to the dazzling big ticket technology. We optimize nutritional status with vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, and other natural substances - by doing so, we optimize your health and healing. In the fight against disease, we use many weapons. We use what works best, whether the interventions are conventional, natural, or complementary. It doesnt matter as we all want our patients to get well and thrive.
In this book, a group of talented authors will offer multiple discussions and therapeutic options highlighting their expertise in cardiovascular disease. Cardiologists, thoracic surgeons, internists, dentists, chiropractors, naturopaths, doctors of osteopathy, PhDs, and more will discuss their individual, sophisticated approach to cardiovascular disease. In the final analysis, we physicians and healthcare professionals want to reduce the suffering of our patients while extending quality of life at the same time. This second edition is a testimony to the balanced and insightful integrative care of the patient.
I personally want to thank all the authors for assisting me in this publication with their hard work and contribution. I would also like to thank the American Nutrition Association for their genuine support.
