CONTENTS
Oscar Wilde said that art reveals more about the one who interprets the art than the artist herself. This may be true in the following memory of Jamie Tworkowski, a man who was particularly struck by a metal bird carrying the mantra Travel lightly and deeply. The bird is on a wall in our guest room. Few have paid those words any attention but Jamie; few live them out as he does.
Jamie, you are a deep river. You feel every bend and rock deeply. And yet, you are still floating through, still searching and looking. Still traveling light and deeply on a pilgrimage toward a hope that you have never seen. Im honored to walk beside you, bro. Thank you for your friendship. And until your river finds the sea... the bird room is yours whenever you need it.

FOREWORD
BY DON MILLER
M y friend Jamie stayed with Betsy and me last night in Nashville. He stayed for two nights, actually. Jamie runs an organization called To Write Love on Her Arms. Its a voice for the marginalized.
I remember staying up late to hear Jamie speak at a rock concert one night. The band asked him to say something before they went on, and Jamie got up in a sweaty, dark room filled with teenagers. He told them there was much to live for, there were songs and dreams and hopes yet to be created. He reminded them that each of them had come to the concert with somebody else, theyd likely come with a friend, and together they could cling to a hope that in the toughest time, they would be there for each other.
Honestly, I didnt know what to make of it. I wasnt sure whether he was going to pass out flowers or what he was going to do. He just left it at that and walked off the stage.
The kids gathered around him, asking for his autograph, and he uncomfortably signed their shirts and posters.
Its been ten years since I met Jamie. Since then, the organization he started has exploded. Hes won awards and grants and appeared on every television show you can think of. People love him. And I swear the guy hasnt changed. He just keeps saying the same thing, softly, as though from some other planet: We need one another. Theres no reason to judge. People are more fragile than you could possibly imagine.
I now consider Jamie one of my closest friends. Hes the one to call me when I say something unkind online. He reminds me people are hurting and we are supposed to be bigger than the Darwinian games that tempt us. And not only does he call me on my crap, but I call him when Im hurting.
Anyway, we were sitting out on the back deck and it was cold. Betsy was in the house getting ready for bed. Our dog, Lucy, was chasing a tennis ball that Jamie and I took turns throwing into the yard.
Jamie is a mystery to me, I remember thinking. He doesnt so much tell a story as he is a story. He pours his heart into blogs and he shares them with the world.
Sometimes, though, Jamie wonders whether what hes doing is worth it. Can things as immeasurable as love, acceptance, grace, tolerance, and forgiveness create a better world? These arent commodities measured in financial exchanges, after all.
