Foreword
The noblest monument for a teacher, scholar, and friend is the creation of a collection of writings inspired by that person's vision of life and literature. The nine essays contained in this volume have come from a company that includes students, fellow scholars, and academic colleagues of E. Hudson Long. The strand linking the authors and the works is the fire of enthusiasm for American literature and American culture nurtured by Professor Long. They are (to echo a section of a book from Dr. Long's favorite author) "sketches by the way." The "way" is the American thought transmitted and interpreted by Professor Long through his teaching, editing, and conversations.
E. Hudson Long is a worthy guide in American civilization. His years of teaching at Baylor University reached from 1949 until 1976 (with a brief postscript in the spring of 1978). His service in the Department of English included the position of Professor of English and American Literature and Chairman of the Department of English; he earned the title of Distinguished Professor of American Literature. Previously he had taught at Vanderbilt University, Ohio State University, and the University of Pennsylvania; from the University of Pennsylvania he received his doctorate with a dissertation on O. Henry. Beyond his teaching his editorial activities encompassed, among other works, the widely used The American Tradition in Literature. His research has extended to American drama and the favoriteMark Twain. His professional activities have included offices in the Conference of College Teachers of English of Texas (for which he served as president), the Texas Folklore Society (also as president), the

American Studies Association of Texas (as a charter member and president).
As an individual he has always shown the courtliness of the Southerner and the balanced judgment of the scholar. A gentleness of manner has complemented the meticulousness of the student. He has demonstrated the intellectual liberty praised by Emerson in the words "Free should the scholar be,free and brave," which were inscribed on the bronze plaque presented to Professor Long at his retirement banquet in November, 1976. It was at this same banquet incidentally that his teacher and friend Henry Nash Smith delivered the principal address.
The editors, who proudly count themselves among Dr. Long's colleagues at Baylor University, offer this collection with respect to a noted scholar and teacher. They owe thanks to the authors of the nine essays who have taken the time from busy lives to show their respect for Hudson Long by writing within their specialties or research activities.
Other persons have contributed to the creation of the collection. This volume has been published by the Markham Press Fund of Baylor University, established in memory of Dr. L. N. and Princess Finch Markham of Longview, Texas, by their daughters, Mrs. R. Matt Dawson of Waco, Texas, and Mrs. B. Reid Clanton of Longview, Texas. Editorial labor and printing advice have come from Melanie McQuere, Frances Stanford, Marvin Goebel, and Lowell Browne. Typing assistance has been provided by Deborah Callan, Rita Humphrey, and Mary Margaret Stewart.
Beyond the contributors and persons responsible for producing this volume stand those numerous admirers of Professor Long who, like Mark Twain before the Mississippi River, learned from him about American

civilization that "it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day." May these essays show the bypaths Professor Long encouraged his followers and friends to pursue.
