ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Books are born in strange ways; you cannot force them, you cannot rush them. QUIET PLACES was the result of a chance encounter. In 1994 I was attending the New England Booksellers Association annual convention when I met Michael Hunter, president of Hunter Publishing. We fell into converstaion, and I explained how I'd been knocking about the back roads in search of quiet places. One thing led to another and within 20 minutes we had an idea for a book that appealed to both of us.
During the final year of writing, it was Michael's enthusiastic words about the chapters I had sent him that helped the project along. No book had ever gone quite so smoothly, and I have to believe QUIET PLACES had a mind of its own, waiting for the right publisher to bring it to fruition. And maybe, just maybe, QUIET PLACES will inspire others to save more of earth's natural treasures.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Tougias is a native New Englander who writes on a wide range of topics, including history, nature, gardening, and travel. His columns appear in the Springfield Union News, The Patriot Ledger, The Middlesex News, The Sun Chronicle and other newspapers. Tougias frequently gives slide presentations about special historic and natural places in New England. Whenever possible he volunteers for conservation work in an effort to save more open spaces. He is the author of Nature Walks in Eastern Massachusetts, The Hidden Charles, Country Roads of Massachusetts, Nature Walks in Central Massachusetts, Autumn Trails, and A Taunton River Journey. His first novel, Until I Have No Country, is an historic work of King Philip's Indian War. It will be released in fall of 1996.
