Acknowledgments
First off, many thanks to the entire team at Peachpit Press, without whom this book never would have happened. My sincere thanks to development and copy editor Elizabeth Kuball for converting my sometimes unnecessarily verbose prose into something thats useful and more readable, production editor Dennis Fitzgerald for managing the process that turned my words on a page into a finished book, and project editor Valerie Witte for making sure that everyone involved did what they were supposed to do when they were supposed to do it (including me). Thanks also to proofreader Steffi Drewes; indexer Valerie Haynes Perry; and designers Kim Scott of Bumpy Design, Mimi Heft, and Aren Straiger for making this book look as great as it does.
Although not directly involved with this book, I should also thank John Mosley, the former executive editor of Planetarian, the journal of the International Planetarium Society, who published my first article back in 1996, which gave me the thirst for getting my work published. I dont know whether he knew at the time that I was only a sophomore in high school, but if he did, my gratitude runs even deeper.
Many thanks to the talented staff of the U.S. Copyright Office with whom I had the privilege of working for just over three years. There are far too many names to mention here unfortunately, but I owe a particular debt of gratitude to the Register of Copyrights and Director Maria A. Pallante, as well as the rest of the senior leadership: Doug Ament, Jacqueline Charlesworth, David Christopher, Karyn Temple Claggett, Rob Kasunic, Bill Roberts, and Elizabeth Scheffler. As creators, were very fortunate to have them at the helm of the national copyright system and that they have the ear of Congress when it comes to copyright-related issues. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them.
This book was largely inspired by the questions I got at the dozens of talks Ive given on copyright issues for photographers, so thank you to all the attendees for your thoughtful questions, and to the organizers of the events at which I spoke. Thank you also to Danita Delimont, Sylvie Fodor, Judy Herrmann, Richard Kelly, Michael Masterson, Gene Mopsik, Cathy Sachs, and Wendy Zieger, as well as the American Society of Media Photographers, the American Society of Picture Professionals, and CEPIC, for all their support of my speaking and writing over the years.
Though writing is a famously solitary endeavor, I was fortunate enough to have a strong group of friendsBrandynn Reaves, Shane Scanlon, Ted Serra, Jesse Solomon, and T.J. Solomonwhose support and encouragement throughout the planning and writing stages of this book was instrumental in getting it across the finish line. As if writing a book werent stressful enough, I moved across the country from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles while working on this project to pursue what is more or less my dream job in Hollywood. Despite the challenges inherent in switching jobs and moving to a new city, I was lucky to have Earl Clarkston, Greg Dina, Melissa Kriz, and Travis Pham to throw me headfirst into their respective social pools, which helped make the transition almost seamless.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank my parents, Anne and Andy, whose constant nagging to do my school reading assignments very likely had something to do with me ending up being so interested in writing, and my sisters, Karen and Jennifer, who had to witness my tantrums about doing the aforementioned reading assignments for so many years (and who graciously agreed to appear in the sample image that appears at the end of I promise the check is in the mail). And of course, I owe a great deal of thanks to my partner, Ryan, who never hesitates to supply his critical but constructive thoughts of my work (and sometimes of me) which serve to make my work stronger and make me a better person. I love you.
Notwithstanding all the help and support of the people listed here, this book is fundamentally my own work, and all errors, omissions, and the like are mine alone.
