This is a companion volume to a work published by the Hakluyt Society eight years ago, The Tragic History of the Sea, 15891622. Narratives of the shipwrecks of the Portuguese East IndiamenSo Thom (1589), Santo Alberto (1593), So Joo Baptista (1622), and the journeys of the survivors in South East Africa (2nd series, vol. cxii, Cambridge, 1959). The three narratives translated in the present volume, like the three published in the previous one, are taken from the original editions of accounts which were subsequently included in the Histria Trgico-Maritima, or Tragic History of the Sea, edited by Bernardo Gomes de Brito at Lisbon in 17356. The present narratives have been selected for rather different reasons from those chosen for inclusion in the 1959 volume, which were all concerned with shipwrecks off the coast of Southeast Africa and the subsequent trials and tribulations undergone by the survivors who managed to reach the shore.
The disasters narrated in this volume all occurred within a few years of each other in the middle of the sixteenth century, and none of them have been translated into English before. They are, how-ever, typical of most of the narratives included in the Histria Trgico-Maritima, in that they clearly reveal two outstanding features of Lusitanian overseas expansion at this periodthe characteristic improvidence of the Portuguese and their equally characteristic tenacity. As Antnio Sergio has pointed out in his recent edition of the HTM, the three individuals who come out best as leaders from a comparison of all the protagonists in these stories of misadventures by sea and land are Francisco Barreto, Jorge dAlbuquerque Coelho, and Nuno Velho Pereira. The last-named featured in the 1959 volume, and the other two heroes are now presented to the English-reading public in this one.
I am indebted to the Trustees and Library staff of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, for permission to take photostats of the unique copy of the Nao Sam Paulo (Lisbon, 1565), which is one of the bibliographical treasures of that library; and to the Trustees of the British Museum for allowing me to photograph the portrait of Barreto, the Vaz Dourado chart and the woodcuts from the
