Abby Whiteside (1881-1956) developed a revolutionary approach to piano technique, the idea of a basic rhythm involving the entire body that allows students to express the essential emotional rhythm of the music, as well as to play without the risk of the injuries that frequently afflict pianists. Her ideas on piano pedagogy remain essential today.

Praise for Abby Whiteside's Indispensables of Piano Playing and Mastering the Chopin Etudes and Other Essays
Forty years after it was written, Indispensables of Piano Playing is an important resource that is still revolutionary in its principles today. Abby Whiteside's concept of basic rhythm is at the heart of the creative process and is applicable to numerous artistic professions. Marcy Lindheimer, Historical Performance Faculty The Mannes College of Music
Of the many books on piano pedagogy, none can surpass the exuberance and passion of Abby Whiteside's essays in Indispensables of Piano Playing and Mastering the Chopin Etudes. Fiercely committed to developing in her students what she called a "basic rhythm"a sense of physical continuity and ease that produces strong musical continuityAbby Whiteside developed a pioneering approach to piano playing and teaching.... Her books do not offer dry exercises, but an approach to creating beauty, they are indeed indispensable. Kathryn L. Shanks Libin Vassar College Department of Music
Abby Whiteside's contribution is enormous. Her holistic approach to technique and music making calls for matching a centrally controlled physical continuity to an intensely heard mapping of the basic undulating impetus of music. Starting with the whole, she brilliantly fits in the details. Forty years, these ideas are just as original, modern, and rewarding as ever. What a joy it is to see them available to the present generation of serious pianists and students. Seymour Fink Author, Mastering Piano Technique

Dedication
I dedicate this new anthology of Abby Whiteside's major writings to the countless correspondents from around the world who have been inquiring about obtaining copies of the books, which have been out of print until now. I also want to thank Abby Whiteside for giving us the tools with which to explore not only the world of music but of other creative arts as well painting, writing, acting, and dancing. Her principle of learning with a basic emotional rhythm has provided us with the freedom to discover ways to apply and teach it. The injuries that many performers sustain could be avoided if they had the knowledge of how fingers, arms, and torso coordinate, or how one balances on the chair seat, and of how all movement happens from the center to the periphery. Robert Frost said in an interview, "A sentence has a sound on which you hang the words." Through outlining with an emotional rhythm one can hear the sound of a phrase into which the notes of the music fall.
