Angry Birds, Hip Hop Violin, and Shampoo
Lindsey Stirling was 23 when she got her first big break on season five of Americas Got Talent.
Described as a hip hop violinist, she had a vision of blending violin with dance. Her performance in the qualifying rounds was well received by the audience, and dubbed electrifying by the judges. Then, in her quarterfinal performance, she stepped up the level of dance, and was promptly eliminated from the competition. So much for her big break. In the words of judge Piers Morgan, youre not untalented, but youre not good enough to get away with flying through the air and trying to play the violin at the same time.
That might have been the end of the story, had cinematographer Devin Graham not contacted her about making a YouTube video for one of her songs. That video was hugely successful, which led to more videos, and greater renown. Her success with YouTube led to being signed by Lady Gagas manager, two successful albums, and a world tour.
As of this writing, Lindseys YouTube channel has over a billion total views and over six million subscribers. Not bad for a woman whos not even 30 years old!
Niklas Hed, Jarno Vkenvinen, and Kim Dikert were all students together at the Helsinki University of Technology in 2003.
They joined forces to participate in a mobile game development competition sponsored by Nokia and HP, and won with a real-time multiplayer game called King of the Cabbage World. Emboldened by their success, they set up shop as a game development company called Relude and started cranking out a combination of work-for-hire projects, published games, and independently released titles.
Fast forward six years: they had changed their name to Rovio and released their 52nd game, in which players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs in or around various structures. They called the game Angry Birds, and it was a runaway success; it reached the number 1 spot on the paid app section of the Apple App Store six months later, and remained charted for months after that, reaching a billion downloads in less than two years.
By April of 2014, they had grown to 800 employees, reporting hundreds of millions in annual revenues.
Brian Creager was living a double life; corporate executive by day, and packaged goods manufacturer by... well, earlier in the day.
For more than a year, Brian got up at 3am to start working on his side hustle before heading off to his day job. That side hustle was selling premium shampoo under his boutique label krieger + shne. His strategy was to sell to barbers in local markets, and it wasnt going nearly as well as he had initially planned.
Then, in a chance conversation at a conference, it was suggested to Brian that he list his shampoo on Amazon. He did, and after seeing some initial success, decided to double-down on the platform. He moved his inventory into Amazons warehouses (to be picked, packed, and shipped through their fulfilled by Amazon program), and immersed himself in the study of Amazons algorithms and the more he did, the faster his business grew.
A mere 18 months after starting his business, it had grown to create an income that more than replaced his corporate salary.
The Teach and Grow Rich Opportunity
The successes of Lindsey Stirling, game developer Rovio, or Brian Creagers krieger + sohne brand of shampoo are interesting, and even inspiring... but theyre far from unique. There are thousands of celebrities and entertainers whose successes were driven by YouTube, droves of mobile gaming companies jumping into the app market, and more product lines and categories than you can count successfully leveraging the fulfillment and distribution opportunities created by Amazon.
In each of these cases, changing market conditions created new opportunities that they, and many others, were able to capitalize on. Some were truly prescient in seeing the opportunity before others did. Others were just lucky, happening to be in the right place at the right time. And many more were a little later to the party, but able to get in while the opportunity was still hot.
The book you hold in your hands isnt about YouTube, mobile games, or Amazon, but it is about the changing market conditions that will lead to just as many impressive and inspiring success stories: the Teach and Grow Rich opportunity. This is the opportunity to create education products (like training courses) that empower others to do what you already know how to do but the one-line description makes it sound a lot more mundane than it actually is. To me, this opportunity is more exciting than YouTube, mobile games, and Amazon put together, for three big reasons: democratized access, the fat tail, and the potential for impact.
Democratized Access
Democratized access is about who will be able to seize this opportunity. You see, most opportunities are only available to people who have a very specific set of skills, expertise, or resources; to become a musical celebrity on YouTube, you need to be a musician, which most of us arent; to build a mobile games company, you have to know how to write software, which most of us dont. And to sell physical goods on Amazon, you need the resources to source, stock, and deliver inventory of your product... which most of us cant afford to invest.
The opportunity to create education products is unique because, while it does require specialized expertise and knowledge, they can be about anything at all. The best education products are about a hyper-narrow topic, which means that the list of opportunities is practically endless. So in other words, the people who will seize this opportunity wont be musicians, software developers, or physical products manufacturers theyll be ordinary people, just like me and you, whove gained some useful knowledge and skill over their lifetime, and want to make the world around them a little bit better by sharing what theyve learned.
Now, this isnt the only opportunity in history thats been open to just about everyone. But unlike all the others, the Teach and Grow Rich opportunity wont be constrained by the long tail...
