Diversity training has become a virtual industry in the 1990s. Approximately two-thirds of American companies offered some form of diversity training in 1995, up from 47 percent in 1993 and 40 percent in 1992.
And no wonder. Department of Labor predictions for Workforce 2000 depict a heterogeneous group of employees, with significant representation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and others. In fact, of the 21 million new jobs expected to open through the year 2005, fully 85 percent are projected to be filled by women and minorities.
At the same time, business opportunities both within the United States and throughout the world require that American workers are adept in languages, aware of cultural differences, and savvy to regional and global markets.
