This book is dedicated to my family, who gave me the love and courage to learn from my own mistakes; and to those longtime readers of my newspaper column who kept asking, "When are you going to write a book?"

Introduction
How This Book Came About
Over the 15 years I've been writing a career advice column, I began to notice certain patterns in the questions I got from readers. They were getting chewed up by office politics, by burnout, by stagnation, by fighting with people instead of making allies out of them. I could see them sabotaging themselves over and over again in the same ways. Different people, same mistakes. Not dumb people, but dumb mistakes. And for what it's worth, I've made most of those same mistakes myself (and a few others too). But that's another book.
There is hope: most of the dumb career mistakes we make are avoidable. And even if you've already made the mistake, you can usually dig yourself out of it. You don't need any charts or graphs

or complicated strategies to get back on course. In most cases, you can solve a career problem by being honest with yourself and others, by being direct, and by maintaining your values.
How to Use this Book
If you're the sort of person who reads a book from start to finish, that's great. You're an author's best friend. But if you're like me, you're probably going to want to jump around in the book, starting with the career mistake that's bothering you right now. That's fine too. Each chapter is designed to help you work on a particular problem. Mistake by mistakeand solution by solutionhere's what you will find in each chapter.
1. Getting Off to a Bad Start. In this chapter, you will find many of the classic mistakes people make when starting out with a new job, new company, new department, or new boss: falling in with a "bad" crowd, not learning the corporate culture, ticking off the wrong people. If you want more information on setting yourself up well, read the chapter on office politics (Chapter 6).
