Preface

So much has changed, and yet so much remains the same. Good managers help others in their organizations succeed. That remains a key aspect of their role. Given the hyper competitive context within which most organizations operate, it may be the most important aspect of the managers job. Modern tools for communications and organizations have mechanized some of the more complex aspects of the managers job. However, the task of helping others identify what they need to do and learn how to do it remains a highly individualized and very human challenge. The manager has to know what needs to be done, consider who can do what, and often times help them figure out what this means and how to do their work better. This core task has always been there.

What has changed? We believe to a significant degree it is the level of certainty within which managers do their job. How organizations will succeed is far less predictable than in the past. We offer our own example, one that well discuss later in the book. When we wrote the first edition of The Coaching Manager, we would never have predicted that that book would end up being used in our online courses at Babson College as well as a number of other schools. We did not know much about conducting a course online and were even less interested in learning about it. By the time we wrote the second edition, we had considerable experience in the delivery of education online. (We still dont believe it is a panacea, but we are convinced that you can do a great deal of good work in an online context.)
