Making Money is Killing Your Business helps business owners move from a focus on trying to make money to building a business that does it for them while theyre on vacation. It debunks the idea that small business is a 30-year-grind, and introduces the concept of building a business in just three-to-five years that runs itself.

As I mention in theforeword, everything I know is a summary of what I have learnedfrom other people. We all learn from one another and the best wecan do is take all of that learning from the world around us, fromour family, friends, business associates, and other leaders, andsum it up in a fresh narrative for a new time. Making Money isKilling Your Business is such a compilation. My life is a sumof all the people who have had an impact on me, and the practicalnature of this business book is a result of all thoseinfluences.

Im grateful for amother and father who built a wonderful family, covered with allthe usual warts and some great strengths. This began the process oflearning for me. And foremost for my wife, Diane, who has been mybiggest source of ongoing strength and guidance. Our incrediblekids, Grant, Laura and Brie, have all contributed directly to mylife and also directly to the writing of this book. They are agreat inspiration to me, and the proud dad comes out whenever I getto talk about them.

I am also deeplygrateful to John Heenan from Belfast, Ireland, who is my brotherfrom another mother. He has been a continuous voice in my ear withguiding thoughts like Chuck, God doesnt make junk, and He didntmake you to fail. John and his friend Mort Murphy from Cork,Ireland, were also directly responsible for getting me started onthe Seven Stages of a Business when they first presented me withtheir own Nine Stages of Business Development. And both of themtraveled at different times from Ireland to Denver at their ownexpense to help me when I was floundering. They are shiningexamples of people who live in a world of abundance.

In 2006, John and Imet halfway in Virginia where he introduced me to a collegial groupof business advisors, scattered up and down the east coast of theUS and in Ireland, that Art and Lisa Radtke had assembled under thename Team Nimbus. My nearly year and a half of meeting togetherwith them on a quarterly basis contributed significantly to theconcepts I use in Making Money. From that early group, avery special thanks to Eddie Drescher who, along with John Heenan, continues as a sounding board and an example of someone who isusing his life to help transform the businesses of many others.

Some special long termfriends who have both directly and indirectly guided me before andduring the writing of this book: my dear friend Gary Bradley whohas always believed in me when many others thought I had lost myway; Donald McGilchrist whose clarity of thought and faithfulnesshas made him a rock for me and many others over the decades; andChip Toth who is unashamed to tell men he loves them and thenactually demonstrate that he does. Thank you for everything you alldo for me and for others.

Since the FirstEdition was printed in February 2010, our Crankset group team hasgrown significantly. Every addition has been precious to me. KristaValentine, our Chief Relationship Of-months before we left for ourBusiness Maturity Date (more on that later in the book). Now she isa partner/owner and were privileged to have her on the journey forthe long haul. Kyle Matthews, our Chief Connecting Officer, movedacross the country to join us. His drive is taking 3to5 Club to awhole new level, and nobody is better at building community. Hes akeeper. Maci OGrady (Chief Freedom Officer), Donna Olson (ChiefHospitality Officer), and Anita Laurence (Chief ParticipationOfficer) are new shining lights in the last year who are alreadymaking us all better. And so many part-time people are committed tobuilding 3to5 Clubs that they are too numerous to list, but not tothank. Thank you.
