We dedicate this book to two individuals who have made
tremendous contributions to the development of Emergency
Medical Services for Children:
To Dr. Joseph W. St. Geme, Jr., who was Chair of the Depart
ment of Pediatrics at Harbor- UCLA Medical Center and later,
Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado.
He chaired the committee that developed the first guidelines
for prehospital care of pediatric emergencies and the first
EMSC component of an EMS system in the United States.
This edition is dedicated to his memory and is part of the
legacy of his valuable work.
To Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, who spear-headed the
federal legislation and appropriation of funds for the EMSC
grant program, for his continued support and dedication to
the principle that children have a right to high-quality emer
gency care.
The dedication of these individuals and all of our EMSC col
leagues is in recognition that children are our future and
deserve and must have the best we have to offer.
