ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michelle Fiddian was born in Melbourne, although her childhood took her to various areas throughout Australia and, at one stage, America. Being raised an only child and later becoming part of a large blended family, as well as having exposure to all kinds of learning and home environments, meant Michelle had experience from an early age with how to communicate with all walks of life. In total, Michelle has two sisters and three brothers ranging from 13 to 26 years younger than herself.
As a natural trainer, Michelle has been given some form of training role in every job shes had dating back to her teenage years. She has also always had a strong interest in the protection of children. Gaining a position as a call-taker with the Triple Zero (000) Ambulance Service (now ESTA) meant Michelle was around paramedics all day and could sink her teeth into real emergency situations. She was quickly promoted to the role of trainer.
Not content with just being the motherly big sister (more of an aunty role), Michelle couldnt wait to become a mother herself and teach her kids all there was to know about the world, provide them with strong morals and independence, and nurture natural curiosity. Finally this dream became reality.
As is the case with many new parents, the overwhelming sense of responsibility that came with the reality of having a baby was something unexpected. This, coupled with hearing everything there was to hear in the medical emergency industry, meant that Michelle was the safety queen where her children were concerned. Years of industry experience meant Michelle was prepared for every possible emergency and was determined to prevent every one of them!
Having a strong focus on household safety, however, didnt make her daughters immune to accidents or illness. The first aid she applied was so simple and, as a mother, Michelle was able to save her children from pain and from needing surgery shes even saved their lives.
During this phase of her life, it became obvious to Michelle that there was a gap in the information that parents were receiving. They needed confidence in themselves to make important decisions and act correctly under pressure, overall peace of mind, physical and emotional wellbeing and of course relevant first aid knowledge. Michelle was ready to support other parents like never before!
First aid is just the beginning, says Michelle. One dad even came up after a course saying, I cant believe how much I gained from your course, and in just a couple of hours. The difference with this compliment was that he also stated initially that he didnt want to come on the course because he was a paediatrician!
Little Aid has also gained many reputable partners over the years, and despite the ups and downs of running a business, the passion has always been there and integrity has never been compromised.
Today, Michelle enjoys being happily married, raising two daughters, helping at her local school, and volunteering at the local lifesaving club in between running her Little Aid business.
ABOUT THE BOOK
How do I get parents to understand the importance of learning first aid? It sounds like a no-brainer but its more difficult than you might think.
Unfortunately, over the years, Little Aid has accepted many bookings after an incident has already occurred. Incidents such as choking have found parents, who no doubt previously thought it wont happen to me, not knowing what to do. This lack of knowledge fuelled their distress and started a very negative cycle of panic fuelling it at a time when they already had enough on their plate, dealing with the emergency situation and their own negative thoughts, such as Im so irresponsible. How can I not know what to do right now?
Knowledge = power!
Rather than negative thoughts running through your head in an emergency situation, lets turn that around to a positive cycle of staying calm and acting appropriately. I promise you, it is possible! We want to help your subconscious mind to kick in automatically during a distressing time when your child needs you most. That subconscious knowledge is what you will learn from this book and could even save your childs life.
First Year First Aid gives easy-to-follow tips to remember for most accidents, as well as illnesses, so youre as prepared as you can be for the most common emergencies that occur within the home. This book is an essential tool for every responsible parent.
Important note |
This book is designed to be used in conjunction with receiving quality paediatric first aid training with a quality provider such as Little Aid. Reading a book is not a substitute for learning from a qualified trainer where you can ask questions and receive hands-on practise with baby and/or child manikins, particularly for CPR. |
