Introduction
About the HESI Admission Assessment Exam (HESI A2)

HESI stands for Health Education Systems, Inc., with A2 standing for Admission Assessment. The HESI A2 has been used for years by nursing schools and other health fields as a tool to assess student readiness. Many schools use it as a benchmark for how well a student can be expected to perform in nursing school or higher education. The content on the HESI A2 involves a variety of topic areas, but most schools do not require every single one. Before you register for the HESI A2, make sure you understand which specific areas of the exam will be required by the school or schools to which you are applying. You do not want to miss any areas needed for an application.

The HESI A2 exam itself is written at a beginning-college-student level. Many topics are covered in high school courses. Whether you have taken advanced classes in high school or not, this book is an excellent review of the science portions for the exam.

The following table details the subject areas on the HESI A2. This book covers the four science areas specifically: biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and physics. The full time available for the exam is typically 4 to 6 hours, depending on the total sections required. Time allotment for each of the science areas is typically 25 minutes, with physics typically 50 minutes. Time allowed is chosen by the school itself. Rarely do students run out of time. The questions are in multiple-choice format.

In addition to the above eight test areas for the HESI A2, there are two sections devoted to personality and learning style. The personality profile is 15 questions, and the learning style portion is 14 questions. These two areas are not scored.

About This Book

As mentioned above, this book covers the four HESI A2 science topics. I believe that any student who has basic knowledge of the science portions can easily use this book to brush up, prepare, and master the required knowledge to ace these sections on the HESI A2. If the school you are applying to requires portions not provided in this book, such as vocabulary or grammar, I recommend brushing up on those topics as well. The vocabulary section on the HESI A2, for example, is largely driven by medical terminology basics.

The four science areas presented in this book are as follows: biology , chemistry , anatomy and physiology , and physics . Each of the four review chapters contains a post-chapter practice quiz with answer explanations. These practice questions were written specifically at the HESI A2 level. At the end of the book are 50-question practice exams for the biology and the anatomy and physiology areas. I opted to not include practice exams for chemistry and physics, as they are less commonly required for nursing school applications.

Retaking the Exam

Although most students only have to take the HESI A2 one time, some students may want to take it a second time to improve their scores. Nursing schools typically accept the higher score and ignore the lower; most also consider a score in the 70%80% range to be satisfactory. Individual schools will post any score requirements they may have.

A Note from the Author

Utilize the cram plan study calendars in to guide you through your review of the content in this book. As you work through the chapters, you will see that the subject matter is presented in an easy-to-read and easy-to-absorb mannera true CliffsNotes representation of the HESI A2 science areas. Take your time, and do not be discouraged if you do not recognize something right away. Most of this knowledge may have been presented in high school, but as anyone in education knows, getting the information to sink into the brain is a whole different matter.
