A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book
Note to the Reader: This book describes a personal approach to weight loss. It is not intended to take the place of your relationship with your health care provider or to substitute for medical treatment of obesity. If you are seriously overweight, are out of shape, are over the age of 40, or have a history of medical problems, we recommend that you seek the advice of a physician before beginning a weight loss program.
Drug dosage: The author and publisher have made reasonable efforts to determine that the selection of drugs discussed in this text conform to the practices of the general medical community. The medications described do not necessarily have specific approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the diseases for which they are recommended. In view of ongoing research, changes in governmental regulation, and the constant flow of information relating to drug therapy and drug reactions, the reader is urged to check the package insert of each drug for any change in indications and dosage and for warnings and precautions. This is particularly important when the recommended agent is a new and/or infrequently used drug.

Foreword
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES, Dr. Cheskin has been a leader in obesity medicine and research at Johns Hopkins and beyond. In Weight Loss for Life, Dr. Cheskin, Dr. Gudzune, and a team of experts have translated scientifically proven interventions into an approachable strategy that people can apply in their current lives. The text includes patient stories, distilled from decades of experiences with patients wishing to lose weight, to explain key behavioral processes that make the lessons described accessible and easy to understand. Everyone can take away important lessons from this book, both those attempting a lifestyle change for the first time and individuals who have been down this road before.
I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Dr. Cheskin for more than 20 years. He is highly regarded for his commitment to science and clinical research. However, I most admire him for his dedication, compassion, and empathy with patients, which clearly resonates in this book. As the director of the Division of General Internal Medicine, I am overjoyed that Dr. Cheskin now practices at the Johns Hopkins Healthful Eating, Activity & Weight Program along with the programs founder and director, Dr. Kimberly Gudzune, coauthor of this book.
The approach to weight management covered here aligns well with the vision of our program. We focus on working with patients to make long-term lifestyle changes to prevent or ameliorate chronic disease and improve their overall health and well-being. We combine scientifically proven strategies with a compassionate and supportive approach to deliver high-quality care for each person.
The principles and strategies highlighted in this book echo the same priorities of the Johns Hopkins Healthful Eating, Activity & Weight Program. Our health care providers are at Johns Hopkins because they are dedicated to bringing patients the latest in care by pushing the boundaries of clinical innovation and biomedical research. By delivering personalized health insights rooted in the latest advancements in medicine, Dr. Cheskin, Dr. Gudzune, and the rest of our team help patients achieve a healthful lifestyle and weight.
I anticipate that the present volume will be an important resource for our patients as well as for the millions of individuals with overweight and obesity around the globe.

Acknowledgments
IN A WORK LIKE THIS, there are many contributors and kinds of contributions. I would like to thank my son, Eric, for his devotion and understanding when the pressures of work and deadlines interfered with our time together; my parents, Al and Greta Cheskin, for instilling their belief that no goal is impossible, including writing a book that will help people lose weight; and my wife, Dr. Lisa Davis, for both her ideas and her steadfast support.
The inspiration for this book arose from the many thousands of people who came to the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center to seek help and the current patients who receive care at the Johns Hopkins Healthful Eating, Activity & Weight Program. Through them I have learned much of what I write about in this book as well as about the value of persistence and commitment.
Credit for the success of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center was due mostly to the staff of the program helping people in need. The writing of this book was aided immeasurably by Linda Bunyard, MS, RD; Robin Frutchey, MS; Shavise Glascoe, MS; Corinne Roberto, RN, MSN; and Suzie Carmack, PhD, MFA, MEd, ERYT, NBC-HWC. Without them the nutritional, behavioral, exercise, and medical/surgical materials would have been only a shadow of what they now are.
