John Stadler - Wilson and Miss Lovely: A Back-To-School Mystery

Another day with Miss Lovely! When morning finally came, it was cold and rainy outside. The bed felt so warm and cozy. Wilson closed his eyes for just a little more sleep. But then he remembered: MISS LOVELY!! Wilson, however, was not the only one up and about! He wondered why nobody else in his house was awake yet. Sleepy mother! Sleepy father! Sleepy sister! But Wilson had no more time to waste wondering. He washed, dressed, and ate in a flurry.

Out to catch my bus! he cried. But when Wilson reached the bus stop, he was all alone. And there was no bus in sight. Yet, not so very far away, something else could be seen quite clearly. Closer, closer, and closer it came! Wilson ran all the way to school. As he drew near, he passed a long line of empty buses.

Thats strange! he thought. Wilson finally arrived at school. He ran up the stairs, down the hallway, into his classroom, and over to his desk. But something was wrong. Very wrong! And somewhere, not so very far away at all, something was approaching. Nearer, nearer, nearer it came! Wilson could not imagine where Miss Lovely and the rest of his class might be.

But he knew Miss Lovely would not want him to be lazy. So he did the arithmetic lesson. He did the reading lesson. And he did the science lesson. Wilson was very tired, but he knew it was time for gym. Still, not so very far away, something was not tired at all.

And on and on and on it came! Wilson loved to play basketball. He threw the ball with all of his might. But it hit the wall, bounced right back, and knocked him down. Bad ball! he yelled at the ball. Oops! he said. Theres no yelling allowed.

I must send myself to the principals office. The principal was not in, either, so Wilson had to decide what to do with himself. You behaved badly, Wilson, he said sternly. Youll have to eat lunch all by yourself. Wilson did as he was told. But very nearby, something did just as it pleased.
