Chapter 1: The Origin of the Paleo Diet
The first wealth is health ~ Ralph WaldoEmerson
Our Ancestors
The Paleo Diet descends from our ancestorswho lived 15,000 years ago. They lived in the Paleolithic Era. Thisera distinguishes itself by the development of the first stonetools.
Our ancestors had a diet where they wouldonly eat natural foods. These foods were foods that they would findin nature, such as fish, seeds, meat and fruits. The foods thatthey ate were nutritious, unpolluted, and they helped them to stayhealthy and strong. Today, the Paleo Diet adopts these foodconsumption habits because of the many health benefits.
Diseases
Studies shows that health problems likediabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heartdisease didnt exist in the Paleolithic Era. These health problemsdirectly descend from the rapid change in our diet. We had tochange our diet in order to survive difficult times. So, whenEurope got hit by a very strong drought, there were not many otheroptions than eating wheat. Wheat was mixed with water and this wasthe birth of the bread that we know today. This also led to theinvention of other foods that we know today, like unprocessedsugars, complex carbohydrates, trans fats, and processed foods.
This modern day diet was a massive change forus and for our metabolism. Our metabolism could never adapt tothese changes in our diet and this led to many illnesses that weknow today. Because of the fact that it was very easy and cheap tomake these kind of foods, we kept consuming them. Today, foodindustries will do everything they can to create cheap, processed, and addictive foods to hook us. However, our bodies cannot handlethese foods, and that is why there are so many sick people in theworld.
Back To the Basics
Because of the new food industry with all itsflaws, we are constantly searching for new ways to gain back thehealth and body we inherited from our ancestors. First, we startedby eliminating fat, but this was gradually replaced by processedsugars. Indeed, the obesity problem would not go away. In fact, theproblem would only become bigger.
Then we realized that our sugar consumptionwas the real problem, so we tried to use artificial sweeteners fora sugar substitute. This didnt help. Studies showed that peoplewho would eat sweeteners would eventually eat more sugars becauseof their sweet tooth.
Now we have discovered that our bodiesrespond best to the diet of our ancestors, the Paleo Diet. This isbecause our bodies were made to consume natural foods, whichincludes veggies, meat, fish, fruits, and nuts. The now-popularPaleo Diet promotes the consumption of these foods.
Chapter 2: 10 Benefits of the Paleo Diet
I believe that the greatest gift you cangive your family and the world is a healthy you ~ JoyceMeyer
Benefit #1: You Are Avoiding ProcessedFoods
Firstly, the Paleo Diet lets you avoidprocessed foods very easily. Because you are not eating anyprocessed food, you will not fall prone to the addiction of it.Food industries today put many addictive ingredients into processedfoods. They do this as a marketing strategy, as it has a consumercoming back all the time. Even when consumers do not feel likeeating processed foods or do not feel hungry, they will eventuallytend to come back and eat more.
Our body never managed to adapt to processedfoods, so when you are avoiding them, you will automatically cutout a lot of synthetic chemicals that were introduced in the lastcentury. Studies also shows that too much consumption of processedfoods can cause depression. You will be baffled by just how manyfoods are processed or contain added processed foods!
Benefit #2: It Cuts Out Empty Calories
We say that a food has empty calories whenthey contain calories, but do not contain any nutrition with realvalue. The most common foods with empty calories are sodas andsugary beverages.
Sodas and sugary beverages are far fromnatural, so it is common sense that we need to cut out those foodsif we want to eat Paleo. The caveman in the Paleolithic Era onlydrank pure water, so you need to cut out sodas, juices, and energydrinks.
For some people, cutting out these beverageswill result in massive weight loss. We tend to underestimate theamount of processed sugars in these beverages. Cutting them outwill also help you to feel better and have more energy.
Benefit #3: Muscle Gain and Fat Loss
The Paleo Diet heavily relies on animal fleshwhen it comes to consuming healthy proteins. These proteins areused to build new muscle mass cells and the more muscle you have, the better your metabolism will work. When you have more muscles,it requires more energy to move your muscles. So, your body willsend all your energy directly to the muscle instead of to your fatcells. This energy will be stored as glycogen in your musclesinstead of triglycerides in your fat cells.
Benefit #4: More Energy
Most of the processed foods or sugarybeverages were created in reaction to our crappy diet. We alldemand more energy, and the food industry supplies us by providingenergy drinks with processed sugars and empty calories. Thiseventually drains us of our energy and encourages us to reach forthe energy drinks and sodas again. Basically, it is a viciouscycle.
