Overview
The red light and near-infrared therapies are well developed and have proven to be an effective remedy to wound healing, a cure for chronic pains, bio-activation of neurotransmitters & enhancement of endorphins level. Clinical light therapy has been useful in the treatment of various kinds of arthritis for almost 40 years. During those periods many scientific and clinical studies were conducted for pain management in general & arthritis in particular. In early periods of red and near-infrared therapies, most of the health professionals were doubtful about the efficacy of this treatment regime. However, in this dispensation, it is now widely known to be an effective form of treatment. The treatment is not toxic, does not emit chemicals, and most importantly, remains very potent for many years.
Red light therapy unlike other forms of conventional heat sources, penetrates into the tissue & heat it up. In other words, infrared devices meant for the treatment of people with arthritis (check subsequent pages of this book) heat and penetrate the tissue resulting to a localized circulation.
The wavelength incorporated in this pain management device work at a deeper level in the joints. They are very effective in the inhibition of painful inflammative episodes associated with arthritis. Nowadays, a synergy of red and infrared light therapy is usually prescribed as a dual approach in the reduction of arthritis symptoms. There is no need to purchase $5000 $20,000 devices to enjoy all the amazing benefits of the red light and near-infrared light therapies. Yeah! You can now partake of these remarkable benefits using a device that cost lower than few hundred dollars. As many individuals have started realizing the importance of having this device in their home, the need for this book becomes very paramount to guide us on how to use these therapies properly in order to enjoy the enhanced energy, speed up the healing process, elevate hormonal health, accelerate alertness & sleeping, increase healthy weight loss, maintain muscle mass and generally combat premature ageing and chronic pains.
What's Red Light and Near Infrared Heat therapy?
Red light therapy is a non-invasive natural technique that posses the ability to enhance our body's immunological response. Red light therapy also known as Photobiomodulation has remained an effective and safe procedure that employs red light emitting diodes (LED) to diffuse spectrums of light into our skin. Clinical studies and research over the years have shown strong proof that the red light and near-infrared therapies have peculiar amazing healing effects. These therapies have positive effects on both the endocrine and immune system in 3 basic ways: Treatment for neurological disorders & pain; Promoting wound healing, nerves/deeper & reduction of edema; Inflammation and chronic joint disorders. Red Light and Near-infrared therapy is a painless, non-toxic procedure which does not produce any heat. During this process, a small amount of red light at a level of 5-10 mm gets absorbed into our skin. Many studies postulated that red and near-infrared has remained a viable and drug-free procedure for the treatments of varying cosmetic conditions and medical ailments in the fields of dermatology, physiology, and neurology.
History of red light therapy
The history of red light therapy can be drawn back to the ancient times. The Greeks were the first to realize that light exposures can provide healing properties that can enhance health restoration. In the 1960's, many European researchers found that certain wavelengths posses profound therapeutic effects through a simple process called photostimulation (examples can be seen in situations where light is used in the treatment of jaundice in newborns) - A Medical condition characterized by yellowish discoloration of the baby's eyes and skin. During the late 1960s, a Budapest scientist Endre Mester discovered the effects of low-powered ruby lasers in the destruction of malignant tumors. Through his research, he was the first scientist to discover the absorption of photons by skin cells via the mitochondrial chromophores and how stem cell activation enable increased tissue repair including healing. This discovery uncovered the medical therapeutic effects of the red light and how we can use varying wavelengths of light to enhance healing of cartilages, tendons, nerves, muscle, skin, bones as well as periodontal and dental tissues. Mester work uncovered the mystery behind the beneficial effects of monochromatic light in the medical world. Thus, he's known as the "Father of photobiomodulation".
Mechanism of red light therapy: How it works?
For more than three decades, red and near-infrared therapies have proven to be of immense therapeutic benefits to our body. It's an already known fact that human body requires light because without it, we will experience great emotional and physiological changes including becoming more deficient in vitamin D. Red light within the spectrum of 600-900nm can easily penetrate our tissue easily compared to other light wavelengths. Once this light enters the human tissue, it changes into cellular energy where it doesn't only enhance the body's natural events but also kick-start numerous metabolic activities such as:
- Increase the body energy levels through the release of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).
- Production of new blood vessels (e.g. capillaries)
- Activation of the body's lymphatic system.
- Decreases inflammation.
- Enhance localized blood circulation
- Increases formation of fibroblast and collagen.
- Stimulation of RNA and DNA synthesis
- Enhances phagocytosis and cellular cleanup
- Restoration of damaged connective tissue
- Lowering of oxidative stress associated with aging.
Whenever our body absorbs light energy especially within the wavelength of 600-900nm, studies proved that biological responses are generated automatically. One of such responses is the production of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which refers to the chemical energy in our body which when received enables our cells to carry out their normal functions effectively. Thus, red lights and near-infrared therapy can reach the nerves, lymphatic pathways, blood vessels, and hair follicles depending on the area the light is applied.
Another easier method of understanding red light therapy biological responses is by considering the "Red color" - According to many researches, red light is naturally energizing, stimulates attention, and a represents source of passion, joy, and survival in humans. Also, the color "red" posses the ability to initiate a "fight or flight" reaction which enhances blood circulation facilitating the beating of the heart, give rise to enhanced sweat production. The red therapy induces biochemical effects on the cellular levels that enhance mitochondria functions. Just like the UV light of the sun that produces some effects on the skin (tanning, freckles, and sunburn), red light therapy activates the defense system of the body. It also possesses the ability to re-stimulate the complex nutrients compartments in our bodies which aid in the healing or rejunevation process.
All the above changes occur homogenously which eventually enable the body to relieve chronic body pain.
